Hundreds Buried in European Avalanches (Universal Newsreel, Jan 1954)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. HUNDREDS BURIED IN EUROPEAN AVALANCHES: Avalanches bring devastation and death to the Alpine nations of Europe. 700 villages are isolated, over 150 killed, hundreds injured as tons of snow and rock hurtle into the valleys. U.S. helicopters fly relief supplies and rescue workers to the area--where grim scenes of the mountain-dwellers' ordeal are filmed. 2A/B/C/D/E. FRENCH PRESIDENT INVESTED: PARIS - Solemn ceremonies in the glittering, golden Salon of Ambassadors at the Elysee Palace invest Rene Coty—virtually unknown a month ago—as the 19th President of France. / SERUM FLOWN TO AUSTRIAN BOY: AUSTRIA - A helping hand from the U.S. rescues little Gottfried Eder from death of dread hemophilia. Bleeding is halted when anti-hemophiliac globulin is flown from the U.S. at the request of the local U.S. Information office chief. / MERCY GOODS TO KOREA: CALIFORNIA - One million dollars’ worth of food, clothing and medical supplies are dispatched to Korea under the auspices of the American-Korean foundation. / FISHING FLEET FROZEN OVER: BOSTON - Trawlers return to below-zero Boston harbor from the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. A catch of 450 tons of fish plus tons of ice encrusted on hulls and rigging makes heavy work for crews. / BIGGEST TROOP HELICOPTER: BRIDGEPORT - Secrecy is relaxed on the newest Marine helicopter, the twin-engined Sikorsky XHR2S, capable of carrying two combat squads and such heavy guns as 105mm howitzers. 3A/B. MOTOR BOAT SHOW: NEW YORK - New boats of all sizes, types and purposes are on display as the Golden Jubilee Motor Boat Show opens. Interest is on a venerable old timer, the "Lillian Russell," built in 1905, but there are modern lines a-plenty in view. / WORLD'S TALLEST BASKETBALL PLAYER: SEATTLE - A camera close-up of Wade Halbrook of Oregon State, shown in a game against Washington, and off the court—trying to relax under difficulties. At 7'3" he's the world's tallest player—and finds that hotel rooms weren't built to his proportions.
