Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. QUINTUPLET DIES IN CANADA: CANADA - Emilie Dionne, one of five famous sisters whose birth 20 years ago astounded the world, and whose life story has been followed by millions, dies of an epileptic attack in a religious rest home near St. Agathe, where she had gone to begin preparations for becoming a nun. Her sisters and other members of the family tender their last respects. 2A/B/C. "POGO STICK" PLANE FLIES: BURBANK, CA - Lockheed's XFV-1 experimental fighter designed to take off straight up, is the first craft of its kind to make a free flight. The amazing vertical-rising plane can "hang on a cloud," as it's test-pilot reports. / INDO REFUGEES FLEE REDS: INDO CHINA - Pitiful pawns of war, the old, the young and the infirm, leave northern Indo China as the hour approaches for the Viet-minh Communists to take over. It's part of a mass evacuation of 700,000 civilians to the south, undertaken with American help. / KID CIRCUS TRAIN SPECIAL: WINNEMUCCA, NV - For 1400 youngsters of Northern Nevada countries, big thrill of the year is the Shrine Circus, and the train ride to the big show in cars the kids themselves help paint. It's a red-letter day from start to finish. 3A/B/C. GOLD CUP SPEEDBOAT RACE: SEATTLE, WA - Averaging 99-plus MPH in the second heat, Slo-Mo-Shun V wins a torrid race against time and other nautical skip-jacks on Lake Washington. Having won the first heat, Slo-Mo-Shun V takes a long lead toward the speedboat crown it last won in 1951. / "SAY HEY" HAS HIS DAY: NEW YORK - Willie Mays, the "Say Hey Kid" of the pennant-contending N.Y. Giants, is honored in pre-game ceremonies at the Polo Grounds. The popular center-fielder receives gifts galore, but Willie is sad when the Braves win the game. / "MILE OF THE CENTURY": VANCOUVER, B.C. - The mile race at the Empire Games becomes the "Mile of the Century"—with Dr. John Bannister of England beating Australia's record-holder John Landy, with both men coming home in less than four minutes. Bannister passes Landy in last 100 yards in a pulse-tingling finish.
