President Urges Army Reserve Buildup to Legion (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1954)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. PRESIDENT URGES ARMY RESERVE BUILDUP TO LEGION: WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American Legion gathers in Washington for its 36th annual convention, to hear President Eisenhower pledge a continuing fight against subversion, and warn of the urgent need for a strong military reserve—a need we have "failed miserably" to meet. 2A/B/C/D/E. DISORDERS FOLLOW VARGAS DEATH: BRAZIL - Street violence racks Brazil following the suicide of President Getulio Vargas. His successor, Joao Cafe Filho, takes the reins of government, and swift action by troops and police curbs disorders. Guards posted outside the U.S. Embassy and other key points maintain armed vigil against renewed mob outbursts. / FRENCH LIBERATION ANNIVERSARY: PARIS - The famed Gardes Republicaines lead the parade celebrating the 10th anniversary of the World War II liberation of Paris, climaxing 3 days of celebrations in which France remembers her deliverance by her allies, even as a new crisis faces the Western nations. / "OPERATION MERCY" AIDS FLOOD AREA: PAKISTAN - The U.S. Air Force speeds aid to Pakistan from bases on three continents, in the wake of floods that left 15 million homeless, inundating some 60,000 square miles. Food, clothing and medicines to fight threatening epidemics are the cargoes of mercy. / PILGRIMAGE TO FATIMA SHRINE: PORTUGAL - Hundreds complete a National Pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, patroness of Portugal. Through the long march, the devout pay no heed to physical needs until they reach their goal. / MUD FISHING FREE-FOR-ALL: FAYETTEVILLE, GA - All come but it's not really free. All the fish you can take home from a lake being drained. Only $5 a head—and go into the mud after them. A few bass and plenty of mud cats—what a fish story. 3. RAMS BEAT BROWNS IN GRID PREVIEW: LOS ANGELES - 58,000 see the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams clash in a pre-season pro grid preview. Passing ace Otto Graham stars for the Browns–but the power-packed Rams repeat last season's exhibition upset, 38-10.
