NEWS IN BRIEF — FLYING MAN-HOLE COVER: PALO ALTO, CA - The Navy's newest experimental aircraft, as weird a gadget as any mad inventor ever conceived. No wings, no propeller. Just a thick disc of metal, with fan blades inside. No controls–but it works! / TREE TOPPERS: SEASIDE, CA - A daredevil tree-topper shows some circus tricks that are his everyday routine. Nimbly scaling a towering forest giant, he lops off its leafy top, and comes to earth down a rope anchored by his wife's hands, a sensational slide for life, to save a few seconds! 3A/B/C. SPORTS — IKE OPENS BASEBALL SEASON: WASHINGTON, D.C. - Spring training is over, and the national sport gets under way. Throwing out the first ball in accordance with hallowed tradition, the President shows a good arm, despite a touch of bursitis. Play ball, America! / CONGRESSIONAL BASEBALL: DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Congressmen turn to the diamond, in a display that may set baseball back a hundred years or so. Seems that politicking is no substitute for spring training. Plenty of fun, lots of hits, lots of runs, lots and lots of errors and the Democrats tie the GOP, 8-8. Game called for exhaustion after the 5th. / AAU DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS: DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Grace and poetry in motion at the AAU Women's Diving Championships. Top girl high-board artists in a delightful display of championship diving form, an appealing fusion of skill and beauty, in action.
