Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. HIGHLIGHTS OF 1955 - Events that made headlines and history, in a year of triumphs and anxiety, a year of disasters and dawning hopes: THE SALK VACCINE gave promise of the conquest of dread polio. Millions of hopeful parents shepherded their children to hastily set up inoculation centers all over the nation. 2. PARLEY AT THE SUMMIT raised world hopes for peace, but the "Geneva Spirit" that emerged from the meeting of American, British, French and Russian leaders proved short-lived. 3. NORTHEAST FLOODS in the wake of Hurricane Carol and torrential rains reduced cities to shambles, and took a death toll of 400 in one of the nation's most densely populated areas. 4. AIR DISASTERS, 2 of America's worst, shocked the nation. One was sabotage, a time-bomb which killed 44. The other was a crash into a mountain, killing all 66 aboard. 5. PERON'S OUSTER by Argentine Army, Air Force, and Navy elements followed his excommunication for a long campaign of religious persecution, and ended 10 years of tyranny. 6. IKE'S HEART ATTACK plunged America and the free world into anxiety for 7 weeks, until his recovery was announced and the President returned to his Gettysburg farm for active convalescence. 7. PRINCESS MARGARET'S ROMANCE ended the breathless anticipation of millions, as the Princess chose between love and duty, and rejected her suitor, R.A.F. hero, Capt. Peter Townsend. 8. REVOLT IN AFRICA dealt France's colonial empire a staggering blow. Months of bloody rioting took thousands of lives and forced the return of Sultan Mohammed ben Youssef from exile. 9. A.F.L - C.I.O. MERGER was achieved. With George Meany as President and Walter Reuther a Vice-President, the new organization mustered 16 million workers under its banner. 10. AUSTRIAN PEACE TREATY brought the withdrawal of Soviet troops, and the return of P.O.W.'s from years of Red slavery. Scenes of tearful, joyous reunion ushered in a new era for Austria.
