HUNGARY REVOLT CRUSHED - 10,000 refugees escape from Hungary as the nation's hopes of freedom, and its gallant revolt, are crushed by seven Russian panzer divisions that take over in a lightning coup, during negotiations for Russian withdrawal. / CANADA MINE DISASTER - Rescue operations in the Springhill, N.S. mine disaster stop with the sealing of the mine to prevent a second coal-gas explosion and fire. 26 are still trapped, while 89 are rescued from the mile-deep shafts. / STATUE OF LIBERTY - The 70th birthday of the State of Liberty is marked by ceremonies, attended by 1,200 immigrants, changing the name of its site from Bedloes Island to Liberty Island. 4A/B.
