Los Angeles Tests “Hook-Up” Prior to Flight of Siam’s King (Universal Newsreel, Jul 1931)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. NEAR-RIOTS ATTEND HOLY CELEBRATION IN “LITTLE ITALY”: NEW YORK, NY - In their desire to lay gifts at the feet of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, throngs storm the shrine at the chapel of Maria Santissima. Feeble and strong, sick and well, eager to pay homage to idol, on anniversary of her feast, tax the strength of guards. The crowd gets out of control and rushes the doors of the church, showering tokens on the Pallottine Fathers for the favors they have received. 2. INAUGURATE WORLD’S LARGEST SEAPLANE EXPERIMENT DEPOT: HAMPTON, VA - The National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics tests a specially designed 2,000-foot channel through which pontoons are pulled by a towing apparatus. The waters are regulated to simulate the resistance set up by ocean currents but the “new shoes” for flying boats skim over everything. The sponsors hope the invention will stimulate aircraft builders into making more seaworthy ships. 3. SLUMP NEARS END AS TOY TOWN REPORTS RECORD TRADE GAINS: BASCOM, OH - Entire population of 500 in this little burgh is happy because depressions mean nothing to kids. The force of 150 workers remains on the job and the happy employees of the one factory go about their task of turning out playthings — dolls that walk and animals that act alive. The dependents of this hard-times-proof industry represent 95 percent of the village’s inhabitants. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. MINEOLA, NY - Hungarian fliers fail 12 miles from Budapest! — Lack of gas causes crash within inch of goal. 5. BROOKLINE, MA - “Poker Face” re-enters the game! — Helen Wills Moody teams with Mrs. Wightman to beat Boehm twins, 6-2, 6-1. 6. VIENNA, AUSTRIA - Marine Police hold odd review! — Adopt unsinkable water-skis as part of first-aid equipment. 7. AUBURN, WA - Pet deer becomes cigarette addict! — But “Pest” eats (eats [underlined] –in film title) ’em — also other strange un-deer-like viands. 8. 100,000 NOBLES FROLIC IN 57th INTERNATIONAL SHRINE CONVENTION: CLEVELAND, OH - Huge delegations from Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis and other cities, vie for highest awards in the great street demonstration. Colorful costumes and unique detachments attract attention in the gorgeous procession, one of the features of the conclave. 9. LOS ANGELES TESTS “HOOK-UP” PRIOR TO FLIGHT OF SIAM’S KING: MONTAUK, NY - In preparation for a trip with King Prajadhipok and Queen Rambaibarni as passengers, the huge dirigible heaves-to in an impressive maneuver while hundreds view the spectacle. The giant blimp is steered toward the mooring post of the USS Patoka, is maneuvered skillfully into position and is finally tied up. Satisfied with her performance the anchor is hauled in, and she “shoves-off.”
