Grateful Populace Repays Drought Debt to Stricken Cities (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1931)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. GRATEFUL POPULACE REPAYS DROUGHT DEBT TO STRICKEN CITIES: ENGLAND, AR - Good weather, plenty of rain, and unrelenting industry, rewards the inhabitants of this locality with bumper crops. Remembering their plight of a year ago, when the sun burned their vegetation to the ground and relief agencies rescued them from starvation, they ship gifts of food to Henrietta, OK, where unemployment and a dry spell is reaping its toll. Fresh grown supplies are sent in a convoy of fast motor trucks, so that hunger will end in the sister community that aided them in their time of dire need last year. 2. NOTED RESORT HOLDS LAVISH MIDSUMMER THANKSGIVING FIESTA: VIAREGGIO, ITALY - Carnival week sets in with a rousing display of color and brilliance. The picturesque pageant of peasants at the Ligurian seashore is a hey-day of rejoicing by the happy natives of Tuscany, grateful for a prosperous, profitable, and pleasant summer. 3. HEROIC PRIEST AIDS FIREMEN AS FLAMES DESTROY TENEMENT: CHICAGO, IL - Rev. Matthew Canning, who is conducting a personal fighting drive against gangsters in his parish, takes a leading part in searching for bodies in the ruins of building razed by fire and explosions in which one life was lost and more than 10 persons injured. Fighters struggle against the consuming blaze in an effort to recover other unfortunate victims. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rare bird comedian comes to National Zoo! — Shoebill, only one in America, costs $5,000. 5. WASHINGTON, D.C. - $1,500,000 goes up in smoke! — Treasury officials destroy old and mutilated paper money. 6. RIVERS CHOKED AS RECORD SALMON RUN ENRICHES FISHERMEN: ILWACO, WA - The “silver horde” jams traffic at the mouth of the Columbia. Even horses are pressed into service by the seiners who make them ford the rushing waters, which are giving up a harvest averaging about fifty tons a day. The hauls are so heavy and the fish so abundant that normal means of carting are insufficient to cope with the tremendous living tide, the most valuable catch in the history of the American salmon industry. 7. DAREDEVIL HURT IN HEAD-ON COLLISION AT EXHIBITION CRASH: ALBION, NY - Reckless drivers are tossed out of their seats like feathers as their automobiles smash into each other and old up in accordion fashion. Mike Felber, of Syracuse, unable to make a clear leap, is critically injured by the impact but Ernie Fosnaugh, of Chicago, is merely shaken up. The men are volunteer operators, performing to thrill the spectators at the fair. 8. CITY HAILS ARRIVAL OF GIANT DO-X AT END OF EPOCHAL JOURNEY: NEW YORK, NY - The magnificent German Dornier flying boat comes out of the skies and glides up the Hudson River over the George Washington bridge with the regal splendor of a true Queen. Aircraft, large and small, accompany the huge ship along Manhattan’s skyline, dwarfed by the tremendous size of the visiting foreigner. It circles the Statue of Liberty and drops to a perfect landing in the bay at the Battery, to receive the acclaim of the metropolis.
