FARMERS RALLY TO SAVE RAVAGED CROPS FROM PEST INVASION: WILEY, CO - A devastating offensive of grasshoppers is beaten back by a mobilized force of men recruited throughout this agricultural district. Every known means of battling the enemy is pressed into service to fight the foe of corn. Tractors and motors invade the insect horde and finally stop the advance, but not before havoc has been wrought by the deadly winged avalanche. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 3. Stunts by American and foreign crack pilots leave the spectators gasping. Phoebe Omlie completes the last leg of the transcontinental derby and is awarded the Bendix Trophy. 8. SUN BEAU’S “LINCOLN” VICTORY TOTALS NEW PURSE HIGH OF $355,000: CRETE, IL - The gallant old thoroughbred swings around the last turn, leaving Pittsburgher, Knight Commander, and Plucky Play in his dust and gallops home to world’s record honors.
