Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. NORWEGIAN LIFE-BOAT CREW VICTORIOUS IN INTERNATIONAL RACES: BROOKLYN, NY - The fifth annual renewal of the event again goes to a Scandinavian ship, as the oarsmen from the SS Bergensfjord sweep through the Narrows and over the two-mile course to the finish line in 24 minutes and 12 seconds to win the Gold Cup of the Neptune Association. The banks of the harbor are lined with 100,000 spectators as the twelve skiffs slide past the starter’s mark and pull into the choppy bay waters. 2. MOUNTAIN COLLAPSE ENGULFS VILLAGE IN MUD AS HUNDREDS DIE: COSCOMATEPEC, MEXICO - An avalanche of black doom moves down the valley after Tlamapa Mountain disappears and leaves ruin and havoc in its wake. Rescuers, digging into the devastated wreckage, discover an entire village obliterated in the mysterious catastrophe, the origin of which still baffles natives and officials. 3. CANADIAN BUNIONEER FIRST IN 50,000 METER HEEL-‘N’-TOE CLASSIC ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - Hank Cieman, world’s champion, leads a field of 91 in the 31-mile walk from Egg Harbor to the noted seashore resort. The Toronto athlete completes the hike in 5 hours, 24 minutes and 10 seconds. He sets a swift swinging pace from the start and is never headed. Ernest Crosbie, of Baltimore, MD valiantly tries to overtake the leader, but his best efforts get only second money. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. SAN PABLO, CA - Matadors lose in annual synthetic bull-fight! — No hits, no runs, but lots of errors. 5. FORT HUMPHREYS, VA - Army mobilizes anti-aircraft batteries! — Observers thrilled by monster 800-million candle-power sleuths. 6. ATLANTA, GA - Anti-Volstead disciple receives just desserts! — Folly of alcohol demonstrated in graphic scenes. 7. WINE-BRICK MAKERS CARRY ON IN FACE OF DRY LEGAL PROBERS: SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Workers continue the manufacture of previous pressed fruit juice concentrate cubes, which, if the purchaser is not careful, may ferment and become beverages that will give the arid forces evidence for the impending court tilts. Shipments far exceeding 50,000 gallons are daily being sent to the eager eastern markets, as factory hands rush process to meet the heavy demands. 8. EMPRESS EUGENIE HITS COUNTRY BY STORM — REGARDLESS: NEW YORK, NY - The styles that upset the third Napoleonic era are revived and the hat that set an empire dizzy delivers a telling blow to the tastes of milady’s millinery of this generation. The fad takes such a hold that even the poor old horse’s sun-bonnet goes the way of all out-moded fashions and the Old Gray Mare succumbs to the edict of the day and dons one, like the others of all classes and colors. 9. WOOD LOSES AS DON SETS NEW MARK OVER HARMSWORTH COURSE: DETROIT, MI - Driving Miss England II at a grueling pace, the English sportsman flashes across the finish line a mile ahead of his American rivals in the first heat of the speedboat classic. The daredevil Briton forces his powerful craft around the dangerous course at an average rate of 89.913 miles per hours, leaving George and Gar Wood in his wake. A half-million persons along the banks are awe-stricken by the thrilling motorboat spectacle which, on the second trial, ended in disaster for the doughty Englishman.
