Hail Fliers’ Arrival; Saved in Mid-Ocean After 6 Days Afloat (Universal Newsreel, Sep 1931)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. HAIL FLIERS’ ARRIVAL; SAVED IN MID-OCEAN AFTER 6 DAYS AFLOAT: NEW YORK, NY - After an epochal rescue by the motor-ship Belmoira, Fernando de Costa, Willy Rody and Christian Johanssen are transferred to the Norwegian liner Stavangerfjord which carries them here — the unachieved goal of their flight from Lisbon. Exclusive Pictures at sea chronicle this event. Brought to this city by steamship, the German aces and their Portuguese companion are heartily welcomed. Only de Costa shows effects of the misadventure. Suffering from injuries received in the crash of the Junkers monoplane, and from the effects of starvation he is carried ashore, there to await quick recovery from his hurts. 2. REDS BLAMED FOR DEATH OF 22 IN TRAIN BOMBING: TORBAGY, HUNGARY - The Budapest-Vienna express is wrecked when an explosion, attributed to anti-capitalists, blows up a viaduct, derailing the crack flier. Hampered by wreckage, rescue workers experience difficulty saving the injured and extricating the bodies of the dead in six of the cars that were hurled into a deep ravine. Three other coaches hang over the snapped structure of the bridge and three remain on the tracks. Notes found on the device that caused the disaster credit the outrage to radical propagandists. 3. GOVERNOR DECLARES MARTIAL LAW IN WAR AGAINST “COW TESTS”: TIPTON, IA - Belligerent farmers, refusing to submit their cattle to tuberculin examinations, bring on an invasion of Cedar County by 1,500 troops to enforce the order. Ranchers, who have successfully withstood the advances of deputy sheriffs, watch the militia surround pastures, set up machine guns, and encourage veterinarians to perform their duty. Soldiers, equipped for battle, patrol the highways, as an outbreak is narrowly averted. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. BEVERLY HILLS, CA - Archer emulates William Tell! — Chester Seay + bow-and-arrow + apple = applesauce. 5. POMONA, CA - Modern milkmaids vie in annual tourney! — Maurine Hamann sets new record of 11½ pounds in 3 minutes. 6. HUNGRY BEGGAR MOB STORMS RICH ESTATE IN FOOD DOLE DEMAND: CALCUTTA, INDIA - Unable to restrain the impelling pangs of starvation, the angry tattered horde overflows the barrier separating one of the city’s richest families from the outside world. Through the gates the excited throngs swarm and request aid as they over-run the vast grounds. Meeting the threat with an issue of food the crowd is routed, and the tenants of the place are spared. 7. DAYLIGHT SAVING IN DISCARD AS AUTUMN BRINGS SHORTER DAYS: NEW YORK, NY - Half the city is caught unawares and the rest do not care, as the clocks go back and everybody gets the hour returned that was loaned out last spring. Guides such the Metropolitan Tower, the Colgate dial and other famous time-pieces checkup hundreds who pay little attention to such things, and who find themselves at engagements and business, sixty minutes ahead of schedule. 8. BORDER PATROL NABS VICIOUS SMUGGLERS IN SURPRISE ATTACK: EL PASO, TX - (Special) Spotting a desperate band of law-breakers, crossing the Rio Grande from Mexico, a squad of the frontier defense service prepares to outwit the outlaws. The group is armed and ready for a fight to a finish to get their illicit goods into this country. Caught off guard and surrounded by raiders waiting to shoot it out there is no course but to surrender themselves and their contraband cargo. These thrilling authentic pictures reveal the constant fight between gunmen and the forces of law and order. An exclusive and breath-taking episode. (LOCAL – BROOKLYN) No title.
