Pacific Fliers Safe After Perilous Trip From Japan to U.S. (Universal Newsreel, Oct 1931)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. PACIFIC FLIERS SAFE AFTER PERILOUS TRIP FROM JAPAN TO U.S.: WENATCHEE, WA - Zooming out of the western skies, Hugh Herndon, Jr., and Clyde Pangborn set down their flying machine after spanning the ocean in 41 hours, 13 minutes — completing the first non-stop flight of its kind in history. Their landing-gear discarded at the start to lighten the load, the airplane is brought down in a sort of pancake squat, which wrecks only the propeller of the ship. The aviators are shaken up but do not suffer disabling injuries after their epochal adventure. Pangborn, a native of this city, is greeted by his mother and shares with Herndon the acclaim of his fellow-citizens. 2. THRONGS IN SILENT TRIBUTE AS MORROW GOES TO FINAL REST: ENGLEWOOD, NJ - Notables mourn at the bier of the financier and statesman, one of the leaders of the era. Simplicity marks the last rites in the small Presbyterian Church, of which he was a member. Former President Coolidge, Vice-President Curtis, Will H. Hays, Gerard Swope, John J. Raskob and Congressional delegations express their sympathy to the bereaved family. 3. FRENCH STATESMEN HEAVILY GUARDED ON FIRST OFFICIAL VISIT: BERLIN, GERMANY - Premier Pierre Laval and Foreign Minister Aristide Briand arrive at the capital of their one-time enemy, determined to work out an agreement for the advancement of the economic relations of the two nations. A regiment of police carefully watches the crowds, which are held back by ropes along Frederichstrasse, but the throngs that greet the diplomats are entirely friendly. Success marks the venture of the two governments. 4. CABIN-PARACHUTE TO ELIMINATE AIRPLANE CRASHES, SAYS ARMY: WASHINGTON, D.C. - A new huge safety device is tested by fliers to prevent air tragedies similar to those which have taken such a tremendous toll in the last year. The development is a real ‘chute able to carry 10 passengers to earth with comfort, seated in the plane’s cabin which is yanked out bodily by the high-flying parasol. The contraption is supported by a huge silk cloth of 5,000 square feet. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 5. DARWEN, ENGLAND - Gandhi visits textile workers! — Little leader inspects district affected by India’s cotton ban. 6. CHICAGO, IL - Gangdom’s “big shot” brought to trial! — Crowds block Court House for glimpse of notorious Al Capone. 7. HUMANITY ACCLAIMS NATION’S RESCUE OF BIRD FROST-VICTIMS: VIENNA, AUSTRIA - Overcome by disabling storms, 25,000 swallows, stricken in their flight to the warm climate of North Africa, are saved from death by an edict of the government, which gives them a lift over the Alps. The helpless little birds are gathered by thoughtful natives, loaded into a huge monoplane and flown from the cold and stormy area to the warmer climate of Italy, where they can fortify themselves with food and sunlight for their journey across the sea. 8. DAREDEVIL YANKEE WINS SENSATIONAL MOTORBIKE CLASSIC: PARIS, FRANCE - Meeting the aces of Europe in a thrilling test of skill, Ray Tauser, American entry, rides them off their wheels in a break-neck race at the Buffalo Stadium. Twisting recklessly along the treacherous dirt track route he maneuvers his way to the front line, out-distances his rivals to the finish tape, and is crowned champion of the meet. 9. RELIEF WORK RUSHED AS 500,000 PERISH IN NEW FLOOD HORROR: HANKOW, CHINA - For the second time within a month the dykes of the treacherous Yangtze River collapse again, leaving ruin and desolation in their wake. The whole Wuhan area covering thousands of square miles is inundated by the latest catastrophe to sweep over the land and hundreds of deaths are hourly added to the staggering toll in the stricken regions. Agencies from all parts of the world enter the territory with antitoxins to forestall the spread of disease, and food is distributed to relieve the famine among those spared. One of history’s most terrible tragedies.
