Grief-Stricken World Mourns Passing of Electrical Wizard (Universal Newsreel, Oct 1931)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. GRIEF-STRICKEN WORLD MOURNS PASSING OF ELECTRICAL WIZARD: WEST ORANGE, NJ - Leaving behind him a record of accomplishment, unequalled in history, Thomas Alva Edison goes to his eternal reward for a life that contributed inventions estimated in monetary value to mankind in excess of $15,000,000,000. At the Llewellyn Park laboratories where he worked for 45 years, old employees and associates are stricken at the death of the aged genius who brought light, entertainment, and achievement to the world. 2. NOTABLES PRESENT AT RE-ENACTMENT OF HISTORIC BATTLE: YORKTOWN, VA - The sesquicentennial anniversary of the birth of Freedom is marked by the surrender of the British forces under General Cornwallis to the remnant of Washington’s Revolutionary army, in a colorful pageant commemorating the event. The scene is portrayed before a gathering of spectators that includes President Hoover, Marshal Petain of France, and General John J. Pershing. Uniforms, guns, and armament employed by the weary detachments in 1781 are again used by actors taking part in the impressive engagement. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 3. GARY, IN - Abandoned coke-dump yields fuel for needy! — Thousands of “miners” layup plentiful winter supply. 4. VENICE, CA - Youngster trains pet goat to walk tight-rope! — Achieves difficult feat after 6 months training. 5. GRAND HAVEN, MI - High School essays sand-skiing! — New sport likely to be adopted for national competition. 6. TOLEDO, OH - New bullet-proof glass resists 25-20 rifle! — Police officials enthuse over non-fail device. 7. T.N.T. ENDS CAREER OF ROMANTIC LANDMARK ON 50th ANNIVERSARY: ALAMEDA, CA - The famous refinery erected in the ’80s by Borax Smith is razed in one mighty thundering blast of dynamite that brings the first concrete structure built in the state crumbling to earth. Antiquated by the march of progress the aged edifice no longer meets the requirements of this modern day and engineers lay lines for its destruction. Mayor Henning sets off the spark, and down comes the historic place to make room for the new Army air base and supply depot. 8. NOTRE DAME BLASTS DRAKE IN PIGSKIN THRILLER — SCORE 63-0: SOUTH BEND, IN - Ossie Solem’s Bulldogs are unable to stem the tide of the Irish, determined to string out their successive victories and the visitors are set down as the Anderson annihilators stretch the University’s record to twenty-one straight wins, with but one tie. Marchy Schwartz, Mike Koken, Tommy Yarr and fifty other varsity candidates tramp up and down the historic Cartier Field turf punching over touchdowns and swamping the invaders in the first engagement of the 1931 season on the home territory. Another great Rambler team shows its stuff effectively.
