GRANDI GUARDED BY ARMY OF POLICE TO FOIL ANTI-FASCISTS: JERSEY CITY, NJ - To avoid demonstrations, Department of State representatives escort the Italian Foreign Minister from the ship, avoiding the metropolis on his arrival in the U.S. for a debt and arms conference with President Hoover. A cordon of armed minions of the law surrounds the party as it leaves the tug and prepares to entrain for Washington. Thousands of spectators are denied access to the visiting diplomat, who is protected heavily against any outbreak that might mar his visit. 2. $12,000,000 BONFIRE MARKS ADOPTION OF SILVER STANDARD: MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Gold, abandoned as the chief medium of trading, forces the retirement of millions of dollars in bills. Government officials gather the now useless currency and stack it into a huge pile to be destroyed, as the paper is recalled from circulation. ICE HOCKEY FANS HAIL SEASON’S OPENING AS DETROIT NIPS GOTHAM: NEW YORK, NY - In a wild exhibition marked by fierce skating and a desperate defense by the battling Patrick band, 14,000 spectators see the Falcons down the Rangers, 2-1. But the rally dies with the auto-city crew out in front. A thrilling start to the winter campaign. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. Only once do the visitors threaten the Zebras’ goal, and then are forced to kick out of danger, and Pitts scampers over the last stripe again, for another touchdown for his “alma mater.” (LOCAL – CANADA – A) WESTERN UNIV.
