Federal Raiders Nab Record Liquor Cargo and Crew of 60 Men (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1931)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. FEDERAL RAIDERS NAB RECORD LIQUOR CARGO AND CREW OF 60 MEN: BROOKLYN, NY - A surprise attack from shore and water by Prohibition Enforcement agents nets the Raritan Sun, a $750,000 oil-tanker, and a $350,000 haul of contraband rum. Under the guise of a registered fuel ship, the boat makes port, almost unsuspected, but the government men are on the job as soon as the landing of the load starts. So swift and precise is the action of the officers, that the bootleggers are caught unawares, and surrender, without resistance, the rich shipment from the 12-mile limit. 2. BILLIONAIRE HEIR AND BROTHER WED KIN OF SULTAN IN TWIN RITES: NICE, FRANCE - A settlement of more than $1,000,000 is made on the impoverished Caliph Abdul Midjid Effendi, exiled Turk claiming direct descent from Mohomet, as his daughter, Princess Durai Shehvar, and niece, Princess Moazzam Jah, become the brides of Prince Azam Jah and Prince Moazzam Jah, sons of the Nizam of Hyderabad — Indian sovereign whose wealth is reputed to surpass the combined fortunes of Rockefeller, Ford and Morgan. Omitting the pagan pageantry usually attendant upon such occasions, the marriage contracts are agreed upon with a simple ceremony at the Carabacel Palace, on the banks of the Mediterranean Sea. 3. PRIZE HORSES DIE IN WRECK OF $1,000,000 LIVE-STOCK SPECIAL: LEXINGTON, MO - A broken track on the Missouri-Pacific Railroad sends the 24-car show train into a tangle mass in which four men lose their lives and blue-blooded thoroughbreds and cattle are killed. Scottish Rite and Tipsy Cake from Mrs. A.C. Thompson’s stables; The Lark, of Miss Mary Gwyn Fiers, and other high-breds owned by Miss Hilda McCormick of Chicago are among those who die. Rescuers using derricks and cranes work feverishly to save imprisoned men and animals from the mounting fatal toll. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. NEW YORK, NY - Daredevil mariner ends 30,000-mile voyage! — Takes 3½ years to circle globe in 32-foot sloop. 5. SPRINGFIELD, MA - Inventor tries out tail-first plane! — Queer craft weighs 450 pounds and can’t tip over. 6. VENICE, CA - Three generations make Yule-tree ornaments! — World’s oldest living glass-blower heads gifted family. 7. VAST SHEEP FLOCKS FEARED LOST AS WILD STORMS HIT UPLANDS: KLAMATH FALLS, OR - Frantic ranchers are confronted with a loss of thousands of dollars as herds of unshorn sheep are snow-bound in the Sierra Mountains. Unable to penetrate locked passes the sheep are left to shift for themselves on the frigid ranges. Many are rescued and brought to the rich grazing lands in the lowlands, and with them come droves of hungry birds, who go for a free ride on the animals’ backs into the warmer climate. 8. HUGE DEMONSTRATION PAYS TRIBUTE TO 21st REVOLT ANNIVERSARY: MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Down the Avenida Francisco I. Madero, into the Plaza de la Constitucion, swings the greatest procession of athletes ever assembled in the nation’s history. Men, women, and children, garbed in costumes worn in baseball football, swimming, track and other sports are in the tremendous column, made more colorful through the presence of “Charros” in native attire. The impressive array develops into a compelling formation before the National Palace and is reviewed in the great public square by President Ortiz Rubio and former-President Elias Calles. The event is a powerful show of the country’s strength. 9. GLEEFUL CHILDREN REVEL IN ANNUAL GROTESQUE FROLIC: NEW YORK, NY - Broadway, the street of amazing spectacles, is held spell-bound by the Macy parade of the world’s largest marionettes. A two-headed 50-foot balloon giant requires a score of people to hold him down. Other features are a 40-foot hippopotamus, a 200-foot dragon, and all flanked by various other air-filled toys from Santa Claus’s workshop. The event is climaxed by 10,000 smaller balloons being sent aloft. Hundreds float around the Manhattan skyline, circle the Empire State Building and then drift away toward Long Island and New Jersey. Finders are richly rewarded.
