Victor Collapses at Finish of Grueling 10½ (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1931)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. VICTOR COLLAPSES AT FINISH OF GRUELING 10½ - MILE WALK MEET: CONEY ISLAND, NY - Struggling to out-distance the nearest competitor, Leslie Kaczender succumbs to exhaustion after winning the muscle-torturing contest by 15 yards. More than 100 face the barrier at New York City Hall in the 21st running of the annual event. Kaczender pulls up with the leaders at the 6-mile marker. Pickin’ ’em up and layin’ ’em down with dogged determination, he comes in first in 1 hr. 54 mins. 48 secs. — but only a few seconds in front of John Klumbach, after a wild home stretch spurt. 2. THRONG OF WORKERS HAIL GOVERNMENT ON NATION’S 13th BIRTHDAY: VIENNA, AUSTRIA - Demonstrating confidence in the Republic, a colorful array of 250,000 adherents to the Socialist rule, swings down the Ringstrasse past the Town Hall. The pageant of the people’s power clearly expresses its opposition to other parties, with disparaging banners and posters, which leave no doubt of the popularity of the new order inaugurated with the collapse of the Hapsburg regime. To forestall outbreaks, police maintain a careful watch over the picturesque assembly. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 3. ST. AUGUSTINE, FL - Young ideas spur old-timers! — Aged couples hold annual reunion at famed Fountain of Youth. 4. SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Walker here to aid Mooney! — Gotham’s chief greeted by Gov. Rolph and Mayor Rossi. 5. DODGE, OR - Nationals win Pacific title in motorcycle-polo final! — Thrilling spills mark 3-2 defeat of All-Stars. 6. MIAMI BEACH, FL - Make world’s largest bathing suit! — Rosie Pachyderm opens winter season — the height of modesty. 7. PICTURESQUE RITES ATTEND TRADITIONAL SOCIETY FOX CHASE: GREEN SPRING VALLEY, MD - Social leaders from New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia join the ranks of the horsemen in the annual revival of this ancient custom. A pack of 50 hounds and the best horses in the country gather outside St. Thomas’ church while the huntsmen participate in the special service. After the ceremony the men and women roam up hill and down dale, over fences and obstructions, pursuing the elusive Renard. But the animal does not give up easily, and after a difficult chase shakes off the last horseman and escapes. 8. 80,000 SEE ARMY SINK IRISH, 12-0, IN SEASON’S BIGGEST GRID UPSET: NEW YORK, NY - A fast-charging Cadet line and the elusive hip swinging slices of Ray Stecker, soldier halfback, accounts for the defeat of the Notre Dame horde from South Bend, IN. Smothering the vaunted Rambler attack in one threatening moment, the West Pointers earn a place among football’s elect by forward passing to Nomad’s goal line, and later cutting the speedy Stecker loose on a dazzling 67-yard dash to another score. It is the first victory for the Gray and Gold over their Hoosier rivals since 1927. (LOCAL – PITTSBURGH) STRONG VINCENT GRID SQUAD DEFEATED BY ACADEMY HIGH, 34 TO 7. (LOCAL – ALABAMA) HUGE THRONGS CHEER BIRMINGHAM POST’S ANNUAL YULE PARADE. (LOCAL – CANADA – A) LT. GOV. ON ONTARIO, HON. W.D. ROSS, RETIRES FROM OFC.
