Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. STORMS RIP EASTERN U.S., JAPAN - Hurricane Helene roars along the Carolinas and Virginia Capes, her 140 miles per hour, winds and slashing rains taking a high toll in property damages. But forewarned residents take cover and no life is lost. Central Japan reels under Typhoon Ida, one of the worst storms in the nation's history. Nearly 600 die, thousands are injured or missing, while property damage alone is truly catastrophic in scope. 2A/B/C. "OUI" FOR DE GAULLE - A landslide victory for DeGaulle's new constitution in France's referendum. Record numbers go to the polls and tally a 4-1 majority, an overwhelming mandate for the new Fifth Republic. / NEWSMEN REACH QUEMOY - Newsmen reach Quemoy for the first time in nearly 2 weeks, flown in by a blockade running supply plane to see how the off-shore island holds up under the Reds' 2-month-old barrage. / CARRIER TRAGEDY - A moment of pride turns to horror, as Britain's newest carrier jet fighter-bomber lands on HMS Victorious, and goes over the side when the arresting gear snaps. The pilot is trapped under the plastic canopy, with a rescue helicopter only feet away, within sight of the carrier, as the plane drags him down to death before hundreds of helpless onlookers. 3A/B. SPORTS — AMERICA'S CUP - Off Newport, RHODE ISLAND, America's Gem of the Ocean, the racing yacht Columbia, completes a magnificent defense of the America's Cup, most coveted trophy in yachting, with her fourth straight defeat of Sceptre, Britain's graceful challenger. / OHIO 23 - S.M.U. 20 - A sensational battle of conversions at Columbus, as Buckeyes and Mustangs clash in a top intersectional game. The Mustangs brilliant passing offense, and the all-around excellence of the Buckeyes, rated Number 1 in America, produce 2 touchdowns each, but Ohio makes 5 points in conversions under new scoring rules, against S.M.U.'s 2, for the winning margin.
