137,000 Belgian Miners Strike (Universal Newsreel, Feb 1959)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. 137,000 BELGIAN MINERS STRIKE - A labor upheaval of major proportions besets Belgium as every one of the 137,000 of the nation's miners’ strike in sympathy with 6,000 thrown out of work when the government closed six unproductive mines. Unrest spreads rapidly. With strikers and sympathizers storming the streets in protest. Communications are cut. It takes heavy police detail to deal with the angry mobs. 2. RETURN OF A RENAISSANCE MASTERPIECE - Long regarded as lost, a 5x13 ft. canvas by Tintoretto is delivered to a Toronto Art Gallery. The early 15th Century work of art hung for centuries, unrecognized as a treasure in a country home in Ireland. 3. FEATHER WEIGHT BOXING - Junior brand in Dallas, Texas, it’s a just-for-fun ring romp of the chippies with a punch. We see a terrific tangle between 9-year-old tomboy, Pam Sproule and Ronnie Bryant. Ronnie B. doesn't quite know what hit him! But it’s the pungent punch of Pam, that's what. 4. NOSTALGIC NEWS / TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TODAY - Senatorial Committee investigating Air Mail contracts, touches off national scandal. The dramatic story of the Army Air Corp carrying the mail. Of its heroics and bitter frustrations. And its serious losses in a unique and memorable page in history. Inventions that look great- with a backward glance. The "Whatsit"–a flying flivver–foolproof constructed and priced at under $700. Then there was the "Dymaxion" car. A streamlined bullet that could outperform many of today's models.
