1,500 Die in Mexico's Worst Storm Disaster (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1959)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. 1,500 DIE IN MEXICO'S WORST STORM DISASTER - Hurricane and floods batter central Mexico, carrying havoc from the Pacific coast where numerous ships including an 1,800-ton freighter are swamped to far inland where whole villages are wiped out by earth slides. With the death toll near 1,500 and still mounting, the grim decision is made to abandon the search for bodies, as Mexico concentrates all its resources on relief for the stricken areas. 2. MOBS STORM CANAL ZONE - Panama-American relations reach a new low as nationalist mobs storm the Canal Zone. Repelled by tear-gas and high-pressure hoses, they turn on U.S. business in Panama itself, and tear down the flag outside the Embassy. 3A/B. POPE JOHN MARKS THE ANNIVERSARY - Rites of high splendor and solemnity mark the first anniversary of the Coronation of Pope John XXIII. Twenty-thousand in St. Peter's Basilica receive the apostolic blessing. / MIDGET POWER SCOOTER - The closest yet to vest-pocket transportation is an Illinois student's 12-pound power scooter. With roller skate wheels and a model airplane motor, it put-puts him to and from the campus at a miserly 100-miles per gallon. 4A/B. NATIONAL HORSE SHOW - In New York City, the 70th annual National Horse Show with the traditional display of precision horsemanship by the Royal Canadian Mounties, and breath-taking equestrian competition between Canada and the U.S. / SOUTHERN CAL DOWNS CALIFORNIA, 14-7 - Unbeaten and untied Southern Cal meets California at Berkeley, and the mighty Trojans have to rally in the fourth period to preserve their skein. The underdogs' surprisingly tough defense, plus a seized fumble that results in a tally gives the Bears a 7-6 lead until Southern Cal's final display of power in a pinch.
