Algeria Revolt Ends (Universal Newsreel, Feb 1960)

Description

The original release sheet reads: ALGERIA REVOLT ENDS The uprising of right-wing Algerian settlers against De Gaulle's liberal policies ends after 8 days that shook the foundations of the Fifth Republic. Faced with an unyielding stand by De Gaulle, and an Army loyal to the government, barricaded extremists capitulate. The crisis is over. MISS CHINATOWN, U.S.A. San Francisco's Chinatown launches the New Year of the Celestial calendar with a beauty contest of Oriental lovelies from all parts of the U.S.A. - including the Deep South! The winner - pretty Carole Ng of San Francisco. ESCAPE CAPSULE TESTED An Air Force volunteer rides a supersonic jet bomber's escape capsule for 72 frigid, storm-tossed hours in Lake Erie, and emerges from the cramped chamber in good physical shape, indicating solution of a new and vital survival problem. INTO THE DEPTHS Off Guam, the Navy's bathyscaphe, "Trieste" surfaces after an historic descent into the 37,000 foot Marianas Deep - the deepest hole in the Earth's crust, and as remote and hostile as outer space itself. An epic feat of exploration. NATIONAL SPEED SKATING At the St. Paul Winter Carnival, the National Speed Skating Championships, including one all-out girls' event in which only one crosses the line standing up! In the major event, the amazing Ken Bartholomew wins his 14th title with a blazing last minute spurt. COMPACT CAR RACES On the oval and across the sports-car infield track at Daytona Beach, Florida, compact cars scorch along in a furious and grueling test. The winners come in at average speeds of 112 m.p.h., on the oval alone, and over 88 m.p.h. on the combination course. RECORDS TOPPLE AT MILLROSE GAMES Indoor track and field stars at the Millrose Games in New York City, including hurdler Hayes Jones and pole vaulter Don Bragg, are topped by the astronomic leap of high jumper John Thomas, who clears 7' 1 1/4" for a new record.
