G.O.P. Convention Highlights (Universal Newsreel, Jul 1960)
Description
The original release sheet reads: G.O.P. CONVENTION HIGHLIGHTS Interest and excitement mount in Chicago even before the arrival of Vice-President Nixon and the formal opening of the Republican National Convention. New York’s Governor Rockefeller, following his 14-point platform agreement with Nixon, dominates the preconvention spotlight. Although he’s ruled himself out as a candidate for either the number 1 or 2 spots, his enthusiasts continue a stirring series of demonstrations. LODGE DEBUNKS RED SPY CHARGES In Security Council debate in New York, Ambassador Lodge gives the lie to Soviet charges that the R-B-47 reconnaissance jet shot down by Red fighters was on a spy flight. He reveals the plane’s flight was tracked by U.S. secret devices, which show that Red fighters actually attempted to force the plane from its flight over international waters into Red air space before shooting it down. A dramatic denunciation of Soviet piracy. BOY SCOUT JAMBOREE In Colorado, Boy Scouts from all over the world assemble for scouting’s 5th National jamboree, the golden anniversary get-to-gether of the scouting movement in the United States. A stirring and exciting schedule of events, from impressive opening ceremonies through the busy days of friendly competition and get-togethers among youths of many different lands. ITALY’S FASHION WAR ON PARIS Italy’s high fashion general staff declares war on Paris’ style supremacy, revealing a dazzling collection for 1961, assembled from the lines of top Italian designers, and breath-takingly showcased against the classic landmarks of the Eternal City. U.S. WOMEN’S OPEN GOLF At Worcester, Mass., blazing competition among top distaff golfers. In the final round, Betsy Rawls holds a lead against close-trailing and hard-pressing challengers and goes on to win her 4th U.S. Open, the first time ever for a woman!
