20 Die in Algeria Riots (Universal Newsreel, Jan 1960)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 20 DIE IN ALGERIA RIOTS In Algeria, the worst crisis for France since De Gaulle returned to power. Following the ouster of paratroop General Massu for opposition to De Gaulle's moderate self-determination plan. A night of bloody clashes among Frenchmen ends with 20 dead, hundreds injured, a general strike, and hundreds of die-hard colonials barricaded in the streets, armed to the teeth, in fiery protest that shakes all France. COAL MINE DISASTER At Coalbrook, South Africa, a time of suspenseful waiting and prayer, as rescue teams dig toward 440 miners trapped in a deep shaft for nearly a week. Rescuers are slowed by deadly gases and hard rock formations, and hope fades, but the digging continues. NETHERLANDS FLOODS Amsterdam's costly floods, in which thousands of homes and small businesses are inundated by a breach in the great North Sea Canal with repair efforts hindered by the storms and savage weather that scourges the Continent. DEMOCRATIC DINNER In Washington, D.C., a $100-a-plate fund dinner gathers top Democratic luminaries, headed by Harry S. Truman, and spotlighting the four front-running Presidential hopefuls, Kennedy, Johnson, Humphrey and Symington. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO In Flemington, New Jersey's venerable courthouse, the sensational trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the "crime of the century" the kidnapping and murder of the Lindbergh baby. Moments of high and gripping drama as the bereaved parents confront Hauptmann from the witness stand - as the State draws its web of fatal evidence inexorably tighter, and finally, the raking crossexamination of Hauptmann by Attorney General Wilentz. A story that gripped and chilled the nation. FILM INDUSTRY COMMUNION BREAKFAST Following early Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, members of the film industry in New York, from the rank and file to union leaders and high company executives, join in the traditional communion breakfast.
