First Polaris A-Sub Goes on Duty (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1960)

Description

The original release sheet reads: FIRST POLARIS A-SUB GOES ON DUTY At Charleston, South Carolina, the George Washington, first A-Sub designed to carry the Polaris missile, takes aboard 16 of the giant rockets, each loaded with an H-bomb warhead, and sails on ocean patrol, inaugurating a new era of naval warfare. SPACE CAPSULE RECOVERED Over the Pacific, airmen snare a capsule fired from the orbiting Discoverer XVII satellite. It’s the most successful operation yet in the Discoverer program, marked by the first re-starting of a rocket engine in space, and recovery of biological specimens. NEW ENGINE TESTED IN X-15 Over Edwards Air Force Base, the half-rocket ship, half airplane, X-15 is piloted by Scott Crossfield on the first test of a new engine over three times as powerful as the rocket that’s already carried the Z-15 to record heights and speeds. RIOTS IN ALGERIA Strife torn Algiers witnesses new violence between Frenchman and Frenchman as police battle students and veterans in a rock throwing melee that began in protest against DeGaulle’s new policy of permitting Algeria to choose between independence and status as part of France. “MIDNIGHT LACE” HAILED IN HOLLYWOOD Filmland turns out en masse for the glittering Hollywood Premier of U-I’s new hit drama, “Midnight Lace.” Among those on hand are Doris Day, John Gavin, Anna May Wong, Martha Hyer, Ross Hunter, Janet Lake and John Saxon. FOOTBALL YALE BEATS PRINCETON 43-22: At New Haven the undefeated Yale 11 battles to Eli’s highest score over Princeton since 1931. “Bulldog” Tom Singleton stars throughout the game as the Tigers’ gallant fight fails to stem the tide.
