Description

The original release sheet reads: DE GAULLE WINS ALGERIA REFERENDUM In France and Algeria, millions go to the polls, to vote on De Gaulle's proposals to solve the Algerian crisis. Despite massive abstentions by the right-wing opposition, and by Moslem nationalists, the votes in favor of De Gaulle's plan add to a clear majority, less than the resounding vote of confidence he sought, but sufficient to be a clear mandate in his favor. AFRICAN SUMMIT MEETING Neutralist leaders of five African nations including Egypt's Nasser, Nkrumah of Ghana, and King Mohammed V of Morrocco with Algerian rebel leader Ferhat Abbas also present meet in Casablanca to map joint action for common goals in the future of the Continent. ADENAUER MARKS 85TH BIRTHDAY West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer celebrates his 85th birthday with a show of stamina amazing in a younger man. After a day that includes family observances, military review, and an hours-long reception line, Adenauer emerges on a balcony still standing, still smiling and still going strong! SHIPS COLLIDE IN BOSPOROUS In the Bosporus, just off Istanbul, maritime disaster and tragedy as two tankers collide. Fire and explosion send flaming oil spreading over the busy sealanes, engulfing a Turkish passenger vessel anchored nearby. At least 61 people die as all three ships are destroyed. SPORTS UPSET VICTORY IN BARREL JUMPING At Grossinger, New York, long time barrel jumping champion Leo Lebel fails in his bid for his 7th consecutive championship. Jim Waldo of Portland, Oregon, makes a spectacular 16 barrel leap to win the 1961 championship. TOKLE MEMORIAL SKI JUMP Some of the finest jumping in many seasons at Bear Mountain marks the 1961 Torger Tokle Memorial Ski Jump, as sub-zero temperatures coat the slope with slick ice. Art Tokle takes the trophy for the fifth consecutive year .
