Germans Hail Johnson Visit (Universal Newsreel, Aug 1961)

Description

The original release sheet reads: GERMANS HAIL JOHNSON VISIT - U.S. SOLDIERS In West Berlin to reassure her citizens that the United States would never desert them in the face of Russian threats, Vice-President Lyndon Johnson is cheered long and loud by hundreds of thousands of Germans. As President Kennedy's envoy, Mr. Johnson declares that freedom can prevail and peace endure. He has a statement for East Berliners as he addressed 300,000 at City Hall: "the days of tyranny are numbered." Later, 1,500 American troops arrive in the beleaguered city after passing through East Germany without incident. They receive a huge welcome from the grateful city. TUNISIANS DEMAN FRENCH LEAVE Three days of rallies throughout Tunis have but one cry: "France Get Out!" On the eve of United Nations debate on the question, natives demand that the French give up their Bizerte Naval Base, center of fighting in July. LAND-SEA BOAT GOES ANYWHERE A six-wheeled Stalwart truck is stalwart indeed. No terrain is too tough for it and it goes to sea under its own power. Later it's to cross the channel on a trip to Germany from its British home. SPORTS RECORD FALL IN SWIM MEET The National AAU Men's Swimming Championships see record after record go by the board - ten in all. In the 200-meter free-style, Tsuyoshi Yamanaka sets a new mark of 2:00:04. Other new world marks are set in the breast-stroke and butterfly at Los Angeles. WANNA GO FISHIN'?? Once upon a time there was a guy we'll call Butch, who went fishing in a plastic boat that looked much too small for him. It was!
