Hammarskjold Killed on Eve of UN Session (Universal Newsreel, Sep 1961)
Description
The original release sheet reads: HAMMARSKJOLD KILLED ON EVE OF UN SESSION Dag Hammarskjold, soldier of peace, dies in a Congo plane crash in the midst of his attempts to bring peace in the fighting between United Nations and Katanga troops. A man who dedicated his life to international understanding and brotherhood, Mr. Hammarskjold strove mightily to bring hostile camps together and to bring peace to world trouble spots. Killed as the UN meets in New York, his death probably will bring a bitter fight between East and West over his successor. His career in the UN was highlighted by his sober, judicial efforts to seek justice for the smaller nations. SPORTS A DAY (OFF) IN THE LIFE OF A POLICEMAN Berliners, rightly proud of their police force, turn out en masse to see West Berlin officers put on their annual show of motorcycle gymnastics and obstacle races. Their dogs get in the act, too, and steal the show - the only theft hereabouts. "OINK" (THAT'S A HORSE) WINS HANDICAP The Chicago horse proves the fleetest of foot in the $100,090 Handicap at Atlantic City as he cops $65,000 first money. "CARRY BACK", the Kentucky Derby winner, was the heavy favorite but he wound up way in the rear, soundly trounced.
