Dominicans Celebrate Dawn of Freedom (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1961)

Description

The original release sheet reads: DOMINICANS CELEBRATE DAWN OF FREEDOM More than 100,000 people celebrate joyously in the streets of the Dominican Republic as they hail what they feel is the end of 30 years of oppressive dictatorship. Units of the U.S. Navy were standing by when two brothers of the slain dictator Trujillo returned to the country. They quickly returned to exile and two opposition leaders were free to enter the country. NASSER PLAYS HOST TO TITO AND NEHRU Egypt's President Nasser plays host to Yugoslavia's Tito and India's Nehru in a Neutralist Summit get-together in Cairo. Nasser is anxious to show the world his prestige hasn't been dimmed by the secession of Syria from his United Arab Republic. WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES MEETS The Third Assembly, with delegates from 50 countries, convenes in New Delhi. For the first time, the Russian Orthodox Church participates in the meeting - a major event in the field of inter-church co-operation. EUROPEAN MEN SHOW THEIR MUSCLES They pick "Mr. Europe" --- and such a display of biceps has not come about since Popeye downed his lat can of spinach. There's a certain man in the audience who takes a close look at himself after the contest. What do you know ----- no muscles! SPORTS "ADIOS DON" IN COMEBACK WINS RICHEST RACE The richest race in harness racing history sees a thrilling comeback for "Adios Don" who was injured early in the season. He puts on a stretch run that noses him home first and he wins $72,000 out of a whopping $145,000 purse. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO A quarter of a century ago King Edward VIII gave up his throne for the woman he loved - Mrs. Wallis Warfield Simpson. He was succeeded by his brother who had a daughter who became Queen Elizabeth. The San Francisco-Oakland bridge was opened. A wonder of its day - it's still the longest single span bridge today. The predecessor to today's wirephoto system, the transmission of pictures over regular telephone lines was demonstrated. U.S. SAVINGS BONDS TRAILER
