Army Reserves (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1961)

Description

The original release sheet reads: ARMY RESERVES: KENNEDY HOPEFUL OF EARLY RELEASE The President answers a question affecting the lives of thousands of families across the nation. What is the status of the 150,000 reservists who have been called into the armed forces? He is in a serious mood as he takes note of rumors that they will serve more than a year of duty. GLOBE GIRDLER - CHIMP MAKES EARTH ORBIT The United States space effort takes a giant step as scientists and technicians orbit ENOS, a 5 1/2-year-old Chimpanzee around the earth. His three orbits are cut to two when his cabin heats up - something an astronaut could have corrected - but ENOS suffers no ill effects in the flight that is a curtain-raiser to a manned orbital flight. PREPARE FOR UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR TESTS All is nearly ready for Project Gnome, an underground nuclear test, a quarter of a mile deep near Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a test to develop peaceful uses of the atom and there is no danger of air pollution. NEW QUEEN TO SAIL ATLANTIC The French proudly hail their new luxury liner, the "S.S. France", as she completes trial runs and prepares to enter trans-Atlantic service. SPORTS EVER SEE A 2,000 MAN RACE? Anyone can get into Belgium's Cross Populaire - a cross-country run - and everybody usually does. 2,700 entrants take off like a pack of scared rabbits and the winner is the man who doesn't get trampled!
