British Plane Team in Daredevil Display (Universal Newsreel, May 1963)
Description
The original release sheet reads: BRITISH PLANE TEAM IN DAREDEVIL DISPLAY A new aerial stunt team makes its debut in Britain. This aerobatic team is the pride of the Royal Air Force and now they are flying supersonic planes in tight maneuvers high over the heads of thrilled crowds. They fly at twice the speed of sound but the pilots handle them like you would handle the family bus. THEY'RE CHASING GHOSTS IN HONG KONG Workers in century-old Murray house complained to the government that ghosts were defacing blueprints and raising hob with electric office machines. So--the government called in Buddhist priests to exorcise the spirits. Photographers found they didn't have the ghost of a chance of getting a picture of the mischief-maker. CRASHING PILOT AVOIDS DISASTER Everything was routine on the carrier CORAL SEA during maneuvers off Australia until a landing plane lost a wheel. The pilot shot aloft again to await orders and then comes in for a perfect crash landing. Score: no injuries. One slightly damaged plane. SPORTS NEW MILE RECORD: FOUR RUNNERS FINISH UNDER FOUR MINUTES Peerless Peter Shell sets a new United States mile mark (breaking his own) as he leads Jim Beatty and company home in a run at Modesto, California. Shell runs the mile in 3:54:0, close to his world mark of 3:54:4. Another world record is set as Brian Sternberg soars 16 feet 7 inches in the pole vault. Phil Shinnick sets a broad jump mark, 27 feet, 4 inches, only to find that it will be disallowed. An incompetent official forgot to turn on the measuring machine to check wind velocity-only a four mile wind is allowed in record jumps.
