Pope Paul VI (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1963)
Description
The original release sheet reads: POPE PAUL VI: WORLD HAILS NEW PONTIFF Throngs in St. Peter's Square wait patiently and prayerfully for the puff of white smoke that announces a new pope has been elected. On the fifth ballot Giovani Battista Cardinal Montini becomes 262nd supreme pontiff of half-a-billion Roman Catholics. He takes the name of Pope Paul VI and pledges to carry on the work of Pope John XXIII who pledged the church to taking an active role in world affairs. KENNEDY IN EUROPE They roll out the red carpet for President Kennedy on his arrival in West Germany and he receives a roaring welcome from an estimated 2,000,000 in Cologne and Bonn. He attendes mass in famed Cologne Cathedral and again pledges the United States will remain in Europe "as long as desired or required." SPORTS GOLF PLAYOFF: BOROS WINS OPEN AFTER 3-WAY TIE Near-gale winds sweeping over the Massachusetts countryside are an additional hazard in the U.S. Open at the Brookline Country Club. No player is even close on par as three men tie for first place and go into an 18-hole playoff. Julius Boros shoots one under par to wrest the title from Jacky Cupit and Arnold Palmer. This is the second open title for the 42-year-old veteran Boros.
