The original release sheet reads: ECUMINCAL COUNCIL REOPENS Carrying on the work of his predecessor, Pope John XXIII, Pope Paul VI reconvenes the Ecumenical Council with new appeals for unity among christian faiths. Nearly 3,000 cardinals, bishops and other church dignitaries are joined by 52 observer-delegates representing non-catholic faiths at the opening session. Along with a search for unity the pope hopes to bring about reforms within the church itself. THE NATION GROWS If you've had the feeling lately that the country seems to be getting a little more crowded-you're right! The tally-board at the Department of Commerce tells the story-the population of the U.S. has passed the 190,000,000 mark and is climbing...every 11 seconds there's a new United States citizen. SPORTS NEBRASKA 14 MINNESOTA 7 The Minnesota Gophers play host to the Nebraska Cornhuskers at Minneapolis to get the Big Ten season rolling and Dennis "the menace" Claridge sparks Nebraska with a touchdown dash and with a 65 yard pass to Tony Jeter that nails the Cornhusker victory pennant on high. OKLAHOMA 17 USC 12 With Southern California in the grip of a heat wave, Southern Cal battles Oklahoma while the thermometer flirts with 115 degrees. From the start, when they recover as USC fumbles, the Sooners are off down upset alley. They pull double reverses and fourth down passes to topple last year's national champions. The football season opens on the coast with the biggest of upsets.
