500 Die in Japan (Universal Newsreel, Nov 1963)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 500 DIE IN JAPAN: MINE & RAILROAD TOLL SHOCKS NATION Within the space of seven hours tragedy struck twice in Japan. First, a mine explosion on the southern island of Kyushu took at least 446 lives and another 348 miners were injured, many seriously. Then 300 miles to the north, two commuter trains plowed into a derailed freight. In the accident, 162 people died, one American. The mine disaster is the second worst in Japanese history. The railroad accident is also one of their most horrible. DOUGLAS-HOME WINS ELECTION Until he renounced his titles to become Prime Minister he was better known as Lord Home, Britain's foreign minister. He easily wins a by-election to the House of Commons and now, within the year, he must call a general election which the Laborites hope to win. AH, BEAUTY, IS A GLOBAL AFFAIR They hold the "Miss World" contest in Great Britain and it's a girl from the Island of Jamaica who walks off with the honors. She's just 20 and 5ft. 2 inches--but Carole Joan Crawford proves that nice things come in small packages. SPORTS FOOTBALL MICHIGAN STATE BLASTS PURDUE The Spartans of Michigan State rout the Boilermakers of Purdue at Lafayette, Indiana. 23 to 0. Fumbles and an alert pass defense give the Spartans a victory which puts them in first place in the Big Ten Conference. TEXAS KEEPS ROLLING ALONG The number one team in the nation, the Texas Longhorns, win their 8th straight game as they down Baylor. 7 to 0. Under Duke Carlisle, the longhorns manage to break down Baylor defenses in the third quarter to make the only TD of the day. Texas remains the only major undefeated college eleven in the nation...(the eyes of the other teams are upon them.)
