Election Upset (Universal Newsreel, Mar 1964)

Description

The original release sheet reads: ELECTION UPSET A heavy snowfall in New Hampshire as the people go to the polls in the Republican Presidential primary is an omen of things to come. The hopes of Barry Goldwater and Nelson Reckefeller are snowed under by a winning write-in vote for Henry Cabot Lodge. The winning candidate, who polled 35% of the vote was half-way around the world, in South Vietnam, as Ambassador from the United States. MID-WEST FLOODS From Missouri to Pennsylvania, river towns have been inundated by the rising water of the Ohio and its tributaries plus other rampaging rivers. More than 100,000 people have been affected by the flood. In Cincinnati, for example, the crest of the Ohio reached 66 feet, that's 14 feet above flood stage! Several Governors have appealed to have many sections declared disaster areas. TRIBUTE TO DAME EDITH EVANS An impressive array of celebrities gather in New York to honor Dame Edith Evans. Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Sybil Burton are among the Britons on hand to honor their English countrywoman. She receives a very secret token from Ross Hunter for her outstanding work in his production of the film version of "THE CHALK GARDEN". THE SALVATION BEAT The British Salvation Army has taken a leaf from the Beatles' music sheets and formed "The Joystrings" in a modern-day effort to bring religion to the people. From street corners they have moved to a night club engagement & soon they will go on tour. Gone are the tambourines and trombones. Yeah, yeah, yeah ....
