The President's Address (Universal Newsreel, Jan 1964)
Description
The original release sheet reads: THE PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS The White House Rose Garden is the scene of an unprecedented newsreel record as President Johnson briefs reporters before delivering his State of the Union message to Congress. Then there are last-minute revisions with speechwriter Ted C. Sorensen before the President leaves for the Capitol with Mrs. Johnson. The President reveals to Congress that spending for the coming year would be less than $98 Billion - a drop from last year of $500 million. On Domestic issues he calls anew for Civil Rights and an attack on unemployment and the ever-present problems of the poor. Announcing a 25% cutback in material for nuclear weapons the President had a warning to any aggressors. BERLIN WALL IS SEALED ONCE MORE The Berlin Wall is sealed once more as the 17-day pass agreement ends. Westerners say their last goodbyes to East German relatives before returning to free Berlin. During the period nearly a million and a quarter passes were issued to West Berlin residents. Not surprisingly, there wasn't one who decided to defect to Communism. ROLL OUT THE BARRELS They are jumping for joy at a resort in the Catskills as 20 high-flying speedsters compete in the 14th annual barrel jump. The test draws the crowds to Grossinger's and they see Kenneth LeBel defend his title successfully.
