President Signs Historic Bill (Universal Newsreel, Jul 1964)
Description
The original release sheet reads: PRESIDENT SIGNS HISTORIC BILL Congress passes the most sweeping Civil Rights Bill ever to be written into law. Five hours after the house votes on the measure, President Johnson signs it into law before an audience of legislators and civil rights leaders at the White House. He calls it "a turning point in history" and uses a hundred pens to affix his signature. A NEW CHAMP AND ONE RE-CROWNED At Wimbledon, Roy Emerson of Australia defeats his countryman Fred Stolle, in the men's tennis singles and thus wins a crown he has sought for nine years. In the women's singles, Maria Bueno, Wimbledon champ in 1959 and 1960, defeats the defending title holder and favorite, Margaret Smith of Australia. It's a stunning comeback for the pert Brazilian. KELSO LOSES: RECORD RACE ON COAST The great horse Kelso, now seven years old, loses by a whisker in the suburban handicap in New York as Iron Peg holds out to the wire. At Hollywood Park in California, a South African horse, Colorado King, equals the world mark for the mile and an eight as he scores his first U.S. victory by six lengths.
