Republicans Nominate Goldwater (Universal Newsreel, Jul 1964)
Description
The original release sheet reads: REPUBLICANS NOMINATE GOLDWATER Highlights of the Republican Convention that nominated Barry Goldwater catches all of the excitement and tension of the down to the wire battle between the senator from Arizona and Governor William Scranton of Pennsylvania. The Arizona leader of the conservative wing clinches the nomination on the first ballot as South Carolina casts its 16 ballots and puts Mr. Goldwater over the top. Other candidates are placed in nomination, including the first Asiatic and Senator Margaret Chase Smith. Governor William Scranton, who fought a losing rear-guard action, makes a plea for unity as Mr. Goldwater picks William Miller of New York as his Vice-Presidential running mate. SPORTS SAILING SHIP OUT OF THE PAST Like ghost ships out of the past, a flotilla of square-riggers rendezvous in New York Harbor. It's a proud fleet that gahters to recall the days wooden ships and iron men. Nine countries are represented by 11 ships, eight of which raced across the Atlantic. The New York skyline provides a modern backdrop for the graceful beauty that is ageless. May these proud ships never want for a quartering wind.
