Description

The original release sheet reads: FIRES RAVAGE WEST COAST The worst series of forest fires in California since the disastrous blazes of 1961 have destroyed thousands of acres of woodlands and hundreds of homes. From Calistoga, north of San Francisco, to Santa Barbara in the south, many of the fires rage out of control. Only a drenching rain will prevent the infernos from spreading. DAY OF FREEDOM Malta, that tiny island in the Mediterranean, has been a strategic military base since the Phoenicians ruled 35 centuries ago. Now after 165 years of British rule, the Island becomes an independent nation in the commonwealth. Prince Philip represents the queen at the colorful ceremonies. EYE RESEARCH AT U.C.L.A. A milestone in medical history is a new eye research institute at the University of California, Los Angeles. It has been named the JULES STEIN EYE INSTITUTE in honor of its major contributor. Mr. Stein had a noted career as an ophthalmologist before founding the Music Corporation of America and he speaks at ground-breaking ceremonies as his wife Christens a bull-dozer with champagne. B-70 IN FIRST HOP A proud new plane, the XB-70 overcomes a score of vicissitudes to make its first test flight. Designed to replace the b-52, the new plane was discarded as a military weapon in favor of missiles. However, despite locked landing gear and blown tires on its maiden flight, the B-70 promises to shape the future course of commercial transports.
