St. Goddard Creates New Record to Win Famous Dog Derby (Universal Newsreel, Feb 1932)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. ST. GODDARD CREATES NEW RECORD TO WIN FAMOUS DOG DERBY: QUEBEC, P.Q., CANADA - With his powerful team of cross-breeds of Malamutes and Russian wolf-hounds straining every muscle, the Canadian Olympic champion completes the grueling 41-mile “mush” with a new course record, winning by a narrow margin of two minutes from Shorty Russick, famous 50-year-old Western driver. Although Russick breaks three marks during the terrific race over the snow-covered trails, St. Goddard finishes with a total elapsed time of 10 hours, 28 minutes for the three laps, eclipsing the best efforts of Russick, Seppala, Girard and a host of other crack dog-sled drivers, annexing a spectacular victory in the “mush” classic of the continent. 2. ARMY SUCCEEDS IN SENSATIONAL TESTS OF ’PLANE PARACHUTE: DAYTON, OH - The newly-designed safety device, spreading 5,000 square feet of silken cloth, drops from the air with a 2,500-pound load, proving its feasibility as a method of bringing passenger cabins to earth. Developed by Major E.L. Hoffman, the ’chute will be made to lower a compartment with 10 persons at a safe rate of speed. One of the greatest advances in modern aviation. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 3. ORMOND BEACH, FL - John D. attends tree-planting! — Aged millionaire honors Gen. Ames, oldest living officer. 4. BANGOR, ME - Coast Guard opens navigation channel! — 14-inch ice-way smashed through on earliest date in history. 5. AURORA, IL - Women rule city for day! — Municipal government turned over to fair sex on Leap Year. 6. TIENTSIN, CHINA - Zero weather forces new transport method! — Coolie drivers adopt “push-push” on frozen canals. 7. DEAD, MANY HURT AS DISASTROUS FLOODS LEAVE WAKE OF RUIN: EDGEWICK, WA - Torrential rains and melting mountain snows swell the Snoqualmie River which breaks from its course, as tons of lumber jam into the creeks and pile up a death-dealing caravan. An avalanche of mud and boulders sweeps everything before it. Homes, trees, and live-stock are brushed from its path as the relentless force moves onward. The entire valley is stricken by the visitation of horror and desolation. 8. ICE STARS CLASH IN BIG INDOOR CHARITY SKATE TOURNAMENT: CHICAGO, IL - The cream of the world of flashing blades competes in the gigantic Western Championships at the famous stadium for honors in the great games. One of the outstanding performances of the event is contributed by Megan Taylor, 11-year British fancy-skating marvel, who parades her repertoire before a thrilled audience. Her father, Phil Taylor, tops off the show by attempting the barrel jump on stilt skates. Charleen Powers, in a burst of speed, edges out Jean Wilson in the woman’s 440-yard event, replete with spills and excitement.
