Collier Crew Lands After Heroic Rescue in Gale-Whipped Sea (Universal Newsreel, Mar 1932)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. COLLIER CREW LANDS AFTER HEROIC RESCUE IN GALE-WHIPPED SEA: BOSTON, MA - The crippled H.F. de Bardeleben tossed in the worst Atlantic storms in years is abandoned by her gallant sailors following a desperate fight to keep the rudderless vessel afloat. Finally, they were sighted, following their S.O.S., and taking off by the British motor-vessel, Laganbank, and then transferred to the Coast Guard boat, Ossipee, which bring them back to port and safety. 2. PATRIOTISM AND NEED COAX FLOOD OF GOLD FROM HIDING PLACES: LONDON, ENGLAND - With Britain off the gold standard, bullion must be shipped to countries holding the pound sterling to support her foreign exchange. The situation has resulted in a real “rush” to Bond Street jewelry shops where rich and poor, alike, dispose of their hoarded precious metal. Many royal gems have been reported sold by impoverished nobles, so the settings can be melted down and made negotiable. “Sterling patriots” are denying the profit, with the government netting 8-shillings in exchange for the silver notes. The movement is fast increasing the nation’s gold reserve, one of the most inspiring demonstrations of patriotism in modern economic history. 3. CO-ED ROUGH-RIDING COURSE INAUGURATED AT STATE UNIVERSITY: TUCSON, AZ - Daring girls answer the call of Army officers for the strenuous equestrian study, and win high praise after a grinding test of horsemanship over vast desert wastes. Seventy-five join the class, and go through a series of exciting drills and intricate maneuvers in the gallop over hills and valleys. An interesting study of the only riding course made part of the curriculum in an American university. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. CHICAGO, IL - Famous “Loop” tunnel becomes new municipal asset! — Council Board accepts merchandise subway. 5. CITY SURRENDERS TO INITIATION RITES OF “FINE ARTS” FRESHMEN: MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - Attired in century old costumes, the first-year students of the National School of Architecture parade through the streets and are put through trying and annoying paces to win their spurs in the institution. Enduring the stunts with true freshman fortitude, the youths are led to the Public Square where they are forced to stand a mock trial and sentenced to be tarred and feathered. Even this fate does not kill the enthusiasm of the youngsters, who are undeterred by their plight and a vision of at least two weeks devoted to daily sandpapering of hides before the effects of their unconventional costumes wear off. 6. SETS NEW HILL-CLIMB RECORD IN THRILLING MOTORBIKE TOURNEY: VENTURA, CA - “Windy” Lindstrom, daredevil pilot, mounts the dangerous 200-foot course up the grueling grade, establishing a new mark of 7 3/5 seconds for the event. Facing the barrier at the incline’s bottom, the best cyclists in the west hurtle over the road in an effort to beat the remarkable achievement of Lindstrom. Throwing caution to the wind, and driving their machines with complete recklessness, the wheel aces take some deadly spills. But their best is not good enough and Lindstrom’s sensational performance takes the laurel wreath. 7. SIMIAN CIRCUS STARS IN FINAL TRIALS FOR COMING TENT SEASON: MIAMI, FL - Miss Billy Woods, crack animal trainer, presses out her spangles and puts her pets through their paces in preparation for the saw-dust ring circuit. Lindy, the ace of high-diving monkeys, leaps 50 feet into his mistress’ arms without hesitation, and Alfred the Great, the king of loop-the-loopers, whizzes down his run through the breath-taking circle and passes muster for another year of thrills for Big Top fans. 8. RESCUERS BATTLE TO AID CITY ENGULFED BY MOUNTAINOUS SNOWS: SILVERTON, CO - Isolated from the world for six weeks, intrepid trail blazers from neighboring communities wage an epic fight through the dense drifts to bring succor to the imprisoned inhabitants of the snow-locked San Juan basin. Pressing every means of transportation, modern and ancient, into service the courageous crews reach the town with food and fuel for the stricken citizens. One of the most moving human documents in today’s news.
