Pomp and Ceremony Mark Observance of Nation’s “Victory Day” (Universal Newsreel, May 1932)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. POMP AND CEREMONY MARK OBSERVANCE OF NATION’S “VICTORY DAY”: SOFIA, BULGARIA - The heroes of the country are honored by the hierarchy of the Greek Orthodox Church at the picturesque memorial to the men whose bravery helped maintain the Republic’s independence through long years of warfare and strife. Archbishop Stephan presides at the impressive ritual. Crack mounted and foot soldiers arrayed in the brilliant dress uniforms of their orders file before the discerning eyes of Premier Mushonow and Minister of War Kissiow in a thrilling display to honor St. George, the Patron of Heroes. 2. MILLION-MILE FLYING RECORD ACHIEVED BY PIONEER AIRMAIL ACE: CHICAGO, IL - Jack Knight, crack pilot, wings into the Municipal Airport, completing his daily run from Omaha, NE, and moves his distance mileage into the seven-figure column. Without accident, injury to himself or passenger or loss of cargo he has flown night and day over the airways of the nation for 11 years. Starting when precarious unlighted routes were the only ones available, Knight has doggedly stuck to his job to earn his spotless record. One of the unsung heroes of Uncle Sam’s great service. 3. GANGLAND FACES NEW CHALLENGE AS POLICE ENROLL ROOKIE ARMY: NEW YORK, NY - Keen-eyed youths, nearly 300 of them, successfully pass the rigorous preparations for appointment to the “City’s Finest” and make their first public appearance before 18,000 citizens at Madison Square Garden. Stepping snappily to the commands of a Police College officer, the yearlings show a finished knowledge of weapons with which to combat the denizens of the underworld. The exhaustive test is climaxed by a “battle royal” where sheer “heart” means more than a scientific job, and not one of the shield winners is found wanting. A thrilling “commencement” by the first graduating class under the Academy’s “six-month curriculum” ruling. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. WASHINGTON, D.C. - Smithsonian Zoo installs world’s finest Reptile House! — Turtles live life of Riley in new lavish quarters. 5. HISTORIC GUILDS HOLD CLASSIC RUN THROUGH VILLAGE OF CAESARS: GUBBIO, ITALY - In a picturesque revival of a quaint medieval custom, the whole population participates in the famous event. The heavy “Ceri” — grotesque floats honoring particular patrons — are borne from the Church of St. Ubaldo on the shoulders of the huskiest and strongest eligible young men of the territory. The holiday is climaxed by the race through the narrow streets of the village to the Piazza del la Signoria, the participants carrying with them the 500-pound “skyscraper” idols. A colorful pageant reminiscent of the spectacles of the middle ages. 6. FANS JAM ARENA FOR FINAL BOUT TO DECIDE SIMIAN CHAMPIONSHIP: ST. LOUIS, MO - With the zoo crown at stake Sammy Green, local challenger, and Billy Bush, of New York, defending title-holder, enter the ring before a huge crowd of biased fans. Nationwide interest attracted to the match has both battlers nervous at the outset of this important fight and the spectators are afforded thrills in full measure. In these pictures of the chimpanzee heavy-weight championship contest, Bruiser Billy invokes all his skill and monkeyshines to lull the Midwestern hope to sleep in the fourth round after a slugfest that would make even a Carnera shudder. 7. METROPOLIS AGOG AS WALKER TESTIFIES IN CITY AFFAIRS PROBE: NEW YORK, NY - The climax of the Legislative Committee’s investigation into the administration of Mayor James J. Walker draws milling thousands to Foley Square for a glimpse of the principals in the greatest battle of wits the city as seen for years. Booed and cheered almost equally, the dapper Jimmy and the stern Samuel Seabury meet in the public hearing room, and amid the din of deafening confusion write into the record the Mayor’s answers to the Inquisitor’s steady and relentless stream of questions. Police reserve squads are rushed to the scene to keep the vigorously partisan throng in check.
