420 Middies Awarded Diplomas at Annual Academy Exercises (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1932)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. ENTHUSIASTIC BRITAIN HAILS OCEAN VICTORY OF AMELIA EARHART: HANWORTH, ENGLAND - Arriving after a flight from Londonderry, Ireland, the first woman to fly solo over the Atlantic is acclaimed by hundreds, cheering her sterling achievement. The only living person who has twice crossed the seas by airplane is welcomed by America’s ambassador, Andrew W. Mellon. Through London’s streets the latest heroine of the skies is conducted on a shopping tour while the natives gape at the Queen of the Skies, temporarily in their midst. A royal tribute to a new popular idol. 2. 420 MIDDIES AWARDED DIPLOMAS AT ANNUAL ACADEMY EXERCISES: ANNAPOLIS, MD - June Week is climaxed by the colorful and picturesque ceremony in Dahlgren Hall that brings to a close four years of strict preparation for careers with Uncle Sam’s sea force. Secretary of the Navy Charles Francis Adams ends the formal commencement with the presentation of the sheepskins and the awarding of ensign commissions. Brisk and precise, the future admirals snap through the affair with marked gravity. Tradition unseats dignity at the close of the graduation as the hats of the seniors fly in all directions in the historic custom that is an integral part of the annual exercises. 3. UPROARIOUS ACCLAIM GREETS CONGRESS OF TRANSATLANTIC ACES: ROME, ITALY - A confetti and flower blizzard covers the bared heads of more than 50 pilots, conquerors of the stormy sea, in the world’s first confab of international airmen. Guests of Mussolini, the array of heroes are led by Sir Arthur Whitten Brown, partner of the pioneer flight from Newfoundland to Ireland. With characteristic enthusiasm the great gathering is welcomed by throngs of excited citizens who jam the public squares and streets. Among the aviators receiving the tumultuous greeting are Harold Gatty, George Haldeman, Albert Hegenberger, Diedonne Coste, Maurice Bellonte, Hermann Kohl, and Wolfgang von Gronau. 4. HUNDREDS IN PERIL AS COLORADO RIVER RUNS RIOT THROUGH DESERT: YUMA, AZ - Waters rapidly rising to dangerous flood conditions, inundating 350,000 acres of irrigated land here and in California, hazard the lives of inhabitants and brings the threat of ruin to property. Working desperately against the rushing stream the populace unite to combat the increasing threat of doom. Heavy granite blocks are hauled from the mountain districts miles away and dumped on the levees in an effort to dam the charging river. Exclusive pictures of an epochal battle by American ranchers against Nature run wild. 5. NOTED RESORT HOST TO 5200 ORPHANS AS NEW SEASON BEGINS: CONEY ISLAND, NY - From 16 institutions flock thousands of youngsters for a dream holiday with thrilling rides and entertainment that make their eyes pop. Zooming in whirling airplanes; zipping down the “shoot the chutes”; breezing over the steep roller-coasters; laughing at the circus performances are just a few of the diversions for the kids. Tired and weary after a day they’ll long remember they troop back to their “homes,” their faces bright with happy smiles. 6. SENSATIONAL MID-AIR CRASH ENDS COWBOY FLIER’S U.S.-TOKIO HOP: SEATTLE, WA - (Exclusive Pictures) Undaunted by misfortune in previous attempts, Nathan Browne, Texas aviator, taxes his huge monoplane, the “Lone Star,” to capacity with gasoline and is forced to dump part of the 664-gallon load three times before the ship lifts into the air, barely averting a crack-up at the start. Aided by Frank Brooks, a refueling attempt over Puget Sound is tried. Suddenly something goes wrong with the contact and a wing snaps off Browne’s ship. Down into the icy waters plunge the flier, his assistant, and his plane, wrecking all hopes of winning the $30,000 for the flight. A sad end to an intrepid ace’s dream, and one of the most spectacular pictures ever seen on the Newsreel Screen.
