Daredevil Air Aces Provide Sensational Show for Sovereign (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1932)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. DAREDEVIL AIR ACES PROVIDE SENSATIONAL SHOW FOR SOVEREIGN: ROME, ITALY - King Victor Emmanuel and Premier Mussolini are among the spectators at Littorio Field to witness the largest maneuvers ever held by the nation’s air forces. 400 crack pilots fill the skies with planes going through formations that send chills and thrills through the vast throng of spectators. Displaying rare accuracy, bombers destroy an entire industrial center; in another test of ability, a squad of 20 men leaps in parachutes from speeding ships. A spectacular story revealing Italy’s power in the air, and incidentally, the first time the King and Mussolini have been photographed together. 2. POLICE BEGIN ARSON QUIZ AS $1,000,000 BLAZE YIELDS MORE VICTIMS: CLEVELAND, OH - Through the smoldering ruins of the Ellington apartment hotel searchers delve for the bodies of at least 15 persons, believed to have perished in the mysterious blast and fire that virtually razed the structure. Spectators and police join the firemen in performing thrilling rescues to guide most of the 500 residents from the burning building. Meanwhile civic authorities commence an exhaustive investigation into the causes of the tragic event that shocked the nation. 3. ROYAL FAMILY LEADS NATION’S CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY: OSLO, NORWAY - King Haskon, Crown Prince Olaf and Crown Princess Martha take an outstanding part in the annual observance of the country’s freedom from Swedish and Danish rule. The picturesque holiday celebrates the end of Norway’s struggle in 1814, with Sweden gaining control after Denmark had been vanquished. The complete liberation of the kingdom from Sweden in 1905 is another event that today brings forth peasants, publicans, and aristocrats to mark the occasion with a joyous celebration. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. WILMINGTON, OH - Armless wonder hailed as master trainer! — Colby Turner amazes science with uncanny dexterity. 5. SOLE SURVIVORS OF “LONGHORN” HERDS END HIKE (MARCH – in film title) FROM MEXICO: EAGLE PASS, TX - The rarest of steers that once trod the plains of the Southwest in the rugged pioneer days reach the Lone Star state again after a round-up below the border and a long tedious drive by daring cow-punchers. Brought here to graze and breed, this strong and vicious herd of animals is the single link reminiscent of the great ranching empire where might and brawn took the place of scientific methods. Aged ranchers view the thrilling sight with moist eyes as the animals are driven through the streets to the plains where their predecessors made history. 6. FRUIT CARS DERAILED BY WASHOUT; BERRIES FOR SALE – CHEAP: DURAND, IL - Heavy rains undermining the cinder embankment of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul & Pacific R.R. cause the engine and several cars of the Southwest Flier to jump the track at this junction. One unit, laden with Kansas strawberries, is demolished and samples of the delicacy are showered in all directions. Natives lose no time in taking advantage of the unfortunate accident, and it’s an ill wind that blows no one some good — for the pickers reap a rich harvest from the wreck. 7. TURF FANS STUNNED AS “APRIL THE FIFTH” WINS IN DERBY UPSET: EPSOM DOWNS, ENGLAND - In a thrilling “blanket finish” the fighting colt, owned by Tom Walls, stage and screen actor, plunges down the stretch to win the most coveted prize in British racing circles. A million spell-bound spectators view the gripping drama as Orwell, the favorite, running at the shortest odds in 25 years, is clearly outclassed by the game little outsider. King George and Queen Mary with other members of the royal household are present, as 21 starters face the barrier for the 153rd running of the classic. Sprinting out from the field as the horses go into the last furlong Fred Lane, riding the victor, out-generals his adversaries, and pushes his mount over the judges’ line to win by a nose. One of the most sensational finishes in the long history of the event.
