California Oarsmen Sweep to Victory in Collegiate Regatta (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1932)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. CALIFORNIA OARSMEN SWEEP TO VICTORY IN COLLEGIATE REGATTA: POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Making good their threat the mighty crew from the Far West match the best eights in the nation stroke for stroke in the blue-ribbon event of college rowing, rowing across the finish line five lengths ahead of a fighting Cornell shell unable to equal the Pacific Coast boat in power. Jumping into an early lead after the start at Krum Elbow, the Bears steadily increase the gap between them and the seven other contenders. A final spurt down the stretch from the railroad bridge fails to bring the Big Red boat up to the western giants. Meanwhile Washington adds another honorable mention by placing third in the long 4-mile historic river classic. 2. TREASURY REPLACES 25¢ COINAGE WITH NEW WASHINGTON QUARTER: PHILADELPHIA, PA - Designed by John Flanagan of New York, a likeness of the first President becomes the standard for the revised currency to be circulated next month. The coin is the first to bear the head of Washington, and commemorates the bi-centennial of his birth. At the U.S. Mint, here, workers bend all efforts toward melting down old and worn-out silver pieces into ingots that are pressed, rolled, and punched with the work accepted by the Treasury Department as a lasting memorial to the great leader, the only President, except Lincoln, whose image appears on a currency issue. IN TODAY’S HEADLINES: 3. INAUGURATE WORLD’S LARGEST BOMBER/DAYTON, OH - Sky monster strikes new note for the future of aerial combat! 4. PRESIDENT REGALES WOUNDED WAR VETS/WASHINGTON, D.C. - Disabled soldiers bearing scars of battle are entertained at brilliant White House lawn festival by Mr. and Mrs. Hoover. 5. DE VALERA’S VISIT ENDS IN DEADLOCK/LONDON, ENGLAND - Conferences with Dominion Secretary, J.H. Thomas, abruptly terminate without settling differences between the Free State and mother country as the Irish President rigidly holds out for complete independence of his province. 6. EVERETT SANDERS TAKES G.O.P. REINS/CHICAGO, IL - Victory for the Republican ticket is predicted by the Chairman of the National Committee who will guide the movements of President Hoover’s campaign for re-election. 7. UPROARIOUS ACCLAIM WELCOMES ARRIVAL OF AMELIA EARHART: NEW YORK, NY - Home again after her hazardous flight, the first woman to solo over the ocean is greeted by a reception reminiscent of five years ago when Lindy’s return was received with frenzied enthusiasm. Up the bay amid a thunderous ovation from harbor craft, with Army and Navy planes cheerfully zooming overhead, the city’s official steamer, Riverside, carries the Queen of the Skies to the Battery. A gathering of the nation’s outstanding figures in aviation pay tribute to her skill as a pilot. Thousands of approving spectators throng Broadway as an avalanche of ticket tape showers the feminine ace. A real American welcome for a real American heroine. 8. 30,000 TURF FANS CHEER HOME-STRETCH FINISH OF AMERICAN CLASSIC: HOMEWOOD, IL - Out-maneuvering a field of eleven of America’s best three-year-olds, Gusto, a rank outsider, wins the acclaim of 30,000 hysterical spectators as he thunders toward the finish, fairly running over William R. Coe’s Osculator to capture the 24th American Derby and a purse of $50,000. Silvio Coucci, young apprentice jockey, proves the master of a formidable array of veteran riders, taking the honors in the last furlong to win going away by two lengths. A thrilling climax and a display of rare horsemanship. (LOCAL – CANADA - A) UNIVERSITY STORY/TORONTO. (LOCAL – CANADA - B) CROSS COUNTRY RACE/TORONTO.
