Democratic Leaders Begin Activities for 24th Party Convention (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1932)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. DEMOCRATIC LEADERS BEGIN ACTIVITIES FOR 24th PARTY CONVENTION: CHICAGO, IL - The forces of the party commence to arrive at the Midwest metropolis for the great conclave to nominate their standard-bearer who they hope will wrest the Presidency from Herbert Hoover in November. Alfred E. Smith, 1928 candidate, is one of the first to reach the scene of the impending battle and declares himself flatly for the candidacy, throwing his brown derby squarely in the ring. 2. – Governor Harry F. Byrd also a possible choice is on hand, championed by General William D. Mitchell, ex-chief of the Air Corps, and Col. Henry Breckenridge, who advance the cause of Virginia’s chief executive as another entry in the race for the White House prize. 3. AMERICAN NET STARS VICTORIOUS IN FINALS FOR COVETED TROPHY: WIMBLEDON, ENGLAND - The sure and steady service of Helen Wills Moody upsets the strong British woman’s tennis team and decides the match that gives the U.S. its first Wightman Cup victory at this tennis stronghold since 1926. Going into the last bracket, Mrs. Moody settles the issue by taking her battle in straight sets from Miss Dorothy Rounds. Thousands of hopeful native fans are doomed to disappointment as the California woman regains the stride that carried her to worldwide fame as the Queen of the Courts. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. CAMBRIDGE, MA - Rough-house confetti battle ends Harvard season! — Gala festivities feature Crimson’s 296th Commencement. 5. BERCHTESGADEN, GERMANY - Humble jeweler constructs smallest motor ever built! — Engineers marvel at perfection of wee power-plant. 6. PACIFIC GROVE, CA - “Flagpole-skater” starts newest silly-season sport! — Nerveless daredevil remains aloft 51 hours. 7. UNKNOWN SHOP CLERK TRUMPS AQUATIC ACES IN WATER-SKI CLASSIC: HIEFLAU, AUSTRIA - Expertly handling himself on the treacherous Enna River course, Joseph Hirsch battles through deadly rapids and whirlpools in the swift stream to lead the parade to a well-won victory. The hazards of the route send most of the contestants into the threatening waters, many of them barely escaping drowning. But Hirsch, a rank outsider, doggedly sticks to his feet and covers the 6 kilometer distance in 15 minutes 10 seconds for a new record. A real thriller in the most hazardous water sport on the calendar. 8. FLYING CAMERAMEN COMPLETE WORLD’S LARGEST AERIAL MAP: NEW YORK, NY - The first time the intricate processes of manufacturing accurate reproductions of vast stretches of terrain have ever been shown on the screen, as the great pictorial masterpiece finally sees the light of day in its finished form. Heavy rolls of specially prepared film are made for a camera designed and built only for work from the skies. From heights ranging between 10,000 and 20,000 feet planes fly over the metropolis and shoot sections of a stretch of 5,000 square miles of territory. These photographs gauge the work of the map makers in calculating the finished mosaics such as those used by the Army Air service. A remarkable work made possible by aviation’s great advances in the last decade. (LOCAL – WISCONSIN) VENETIAN THEATRE SPECIAL: WISCONSIN JUNIOR POLICE FORCE HOLDS GALA.
