Natives in Terror as Violent Earthquake Wrecks Metropolis (Universal Newsreel, Jun 1932)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. NATIVES IN TERROR AS VIOLENT EARTHQUAKE WRECKS METROPOLIS: COLIMA, MEXICO - Striking suddenly during the night, the terrific shock rocks the city, taking a death toll of 34 and leaving hundreds of people homeless and destitute. Public buildings and private dwellings topple and crack during the quarter-hour of horror. With hospitals in ruins, soldiers take command of the stricken area, set up relief stations and start to rehabilitate damaged property. Governor Salvador Saucedo, acting on a plea of the survivors, unites all government agencies toward bringing succor to the sufferers. 2. REINFORCEMENTS BY AIR AND RAIL SWELL BONUS ARMY’S RANKS: EL PASO, TX - A perfectly organized unit 2,200 strong that started from the coast reaches this city determined to continue on to Washington to advocate the cash payment of adjusted compensation claims. Texas & Pacific Railroad officials promise resistance to any attempt to appropriate freights for transportation. The ex-soldiers defy the edict and clamber aboard moving trains, as their air corps accompanies them to lend support from the skies. The planes under command of Russell R. Benton make this movement the best-equipped detachment aiming to impress Congress, and the first unit honored by having its own Aviation Division. 3. CURTIS ON TRIAL FOR OBSTRUCTING JUSTICE IN LINDY KIDNAP CASE: FLEMINGTON, NJ - The Norfolk, VA, shipbuilder faces Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh, who accuses him of misleading the search for his stolen baby. Accompanied by his daughter, Constance, the indicted man stands before the jury holding his fate while his defenders charge the police with attempting to “railroad” him. Pathos and tense drama enter the trial at the very outset when the Lone Eagle takes the stand as the first witness called by the prosecution to relate his experiences in the alleged deal with Curtis for the return of his son. NEWS PARAGRAPHS: 4. SOMERVILLE, MA - Youthful Arthur Sullivan uses aural appendages for vaporous exhalations! — In other words, he smokes through his ears. 5. CENSOR WAR DIVIDES MODISTE CAMPS ON ULTRA BEACH MODES: PARIS, FRANCE - Just what fashions will prevail at the shore resorts for the summer season? That is the question that splits the designers of styles into slivers of red-hot prejudice. One leans to conservatism and the other favors freedom of the knees (and etc.) which brings forth disciples of both schools displaying the favored modes of each. The result throws the experts into a panic of confusion, leaving the decision high and dry with never a bathing suit wet although the staid models are left reeling on the ropes by the showing of the radicals. 6. REPEAL DEMANDED IN DEMOCRATIC KEYNOTE AS CONVENTION OPENS: CHICAGO, IL - National Chairman John J. Raskob bangs the gavel and the 24th conclave of the party gets under way with a real old-fashioned knock-down-drag-’em-out fight threatening to divide the delegates on the half dozen issues that overshadow — for the moment — the selection of a candidate. Senator Alben W. Barkley, of Kentucky, sounds the first gun for outright repeal of the 18th Amendment and wins a few boos mingled with approving cheers. The 1932 presidential handicap starts with the oldest party looking, in militant fashion, for a standard-bearer to pit against Herbert Hoover. (LOCAL – CANADA - A) BLESSING AUTOS. (LOCAL – CANADA - B) PRESENTATION OF COLORS.
