Cardinal Spellman's Funeral (Universal Newsreel, Dec 1967)
Description
The original release sheet reads: CARDINAL SPELLMAN'S FUNERAL Nine Cardinals, nineteen Bishops, President Johnson, Vice-President Humphrey, hundreds of other dignitaries, both church and lay officials, and thousands of mourners of all faiths jam Saint Patrick's Cathedral for the funeral of Francis Cardinal Spellman. Following a Pontifical Mass, his body is interred in a crypt with his six predecessors, beneath the Cathedral's main altar. BRIDGE At least 35 construction workers are killed in the collapse of a bridge in Mexico. The search for victims is hampered by tons of concrete and twisted steel. The bridge gave way without warning and plunged 350 feet into a deep gorge. FLOODS Millions in damage, and thousands homeless as angry seas pound coastal areas of Puerto Rico, not far from San Juan. The entire region is declared a disaster area. More than 300 homes are reduced to kindling. BROWNS-GIANTS The Cleveland Browns top the New York Giants 24-14, to draw one step closer to the Century Division Championship in the NFL. An intercepted Giant pass for a 79-yard T.D. is the game's turning point. COLTS-COWBOYS In a real squeaker, the Baltimore Colts squeeze by the Dallas Cowboys, 23-17, with Lenny Moore scoring the deciding T.D. with only 90 seconds to go. The Colts remain the only unbeaten team in the NFL. RAIDERS-CHARGERS Oakland beats San Diego, 41-21, and takes firm hold on first place in the AFL's Western Division. Raider quarterback Daryle Lamonica throws four T.D. passes.
