Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. BLIZZARD MAROONS 1000 AUTOS: ARROWHEAD, CA - Two thousand men, women and children, returning home in cars from Arrowhead Lake, are snowbound when the worst storm in 30 years clogs the mountain roads with heavy drifts, halting traffic and burying the machines under deep banks until snow-plows and tractors can dig them out the next day. Hundreds of lives are saved by heroic work on the part of volunteer rescuers in aiding the luckless autoists and their families back to shelter. 2. GEN. TAMON IS HAILED AS HERO: SENDAI, JAPAN - An amazing welcome, participated in by more than 100,000 of the Mikado’s subjects, greets Lieut. Gen. Jiro Tamon, commander of the Second Nippon Division, when he brings the unit back to its home station after a victorious campaign against Chinese and Manchurian irregulars in Northern Manchuria. The General is lionized and his troops are feted in a spectacular celebration. 3. “BROWNIES” TAKE ZERO SWIM: MANCHESTER, NH - Unusual scenes of a mid-winter frolic in which a score of intrepid men and girls chop “an old swimming hole” in the ice of Pine Island Park Lake and indulge in aquatic sports with the temperature at 4 degrees above zero. Spring-board diving, sprint races and general splashing around in the icy water feature the polar bear party. 4. STORMS FORCE SEA LIONS INLAND: CATALINA ISLAND, CA - A remarkable view of thousands of animals massed along the shores of this resort as a result of the rough weather experienced recently in this part of the Pacific. Ordinarily seen only in small groups, the gales have driven them to seek shelter in huge numbers. After a rest they will continue their journey to southern waters. The present concentration is a sight not equaled in many years. 5. WINS SKI JUMP TITLE: SNOQUALMIE PASS, WA - Thrilling leaps and spills feature the third annual Northwest jumping contest in the heart of the Cascade Mountains. Fifty-three entrants, from four States and Canada, perform unusually stirring glides through the air, with British Columbia carrying off all honors, as Nordal Kaldahl takes top rating by a perfect jump of 185 feet. A striking exhibition of skill and daring in a superb setting. HIGHLIGHTS IN THE NEWS: 6. 300-MILE AUTO ARRIVES FOR TRY-OUT/DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The arrival of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking racer, Bluebird, is a gala event, with great interest shown in the unloading of the giant speed-car and its towed trip to the garage where it will be tuned up for a try later this month at the 300-miles-an-hour mark. 7. AGED CARVER MAKES NOVEL WIND MACHINES/EUREKA SPRINGS, AR - Woodpeckers peck, women churn and scrub, children ride horses, men saw wood, dogs chase rabbits, husbands and wives battle and many other activities take place when the wind blows in the back-yard of W.O. Perkins. His hobby is carving miniature figures and setting them in motion by windmill-driven mechanisms. 8. LIQUOR SMUGGLING A MAGICIAN’S ART/BUFFALO, NY - Border liquor sleuths of the U.S. Customs, stationed at the Peace Bridge, discover smuggled whiskey in amazing places, including leg-belt containers, copper corsets, banjo cases, spare tires and dummy storage batteries. Ingenious methods of the sojourners returning from Canada usually meet defeat at the hands of Uncle Sam’s sharp-witted agents.
