Zangara, Who Tried to Kill Roosevelt, Sentenced to 80 Yrs (Universal Newsreel, Feb 1933)
Description
The original release sheet reads: 1. POPE TALKS 1st TIME FOR MOTION PICTURES DEDICATING OWN RADIO: VATICAN CITY, ITALY - Unprecedented scenes of the Pontiff, Pius XI, on his initial appearance for the sound screen, officiating at the opening of the Holy See’s ultra-short wave radio station, a recent invention of Guglielmo Marconi, wireless wizard, and the only one of its kind in the world. His Holiness, after inspecting the plant, thanks Marconi for the new broadcasting facilities in an impressive speech which is recorded for the Universal Talking Newsreel. 2. ZANGARA, WHO TRIED TO KILL ROOSEVELT, SENTENCED TO 80 YRS.: MIAMI, FL - Glorying in his crime and stoutly maintaining his regret that he did not end the life of the President-elect, the would-be assassin, rebuking the judge for not sending him to the electric chair, is found guilty on four charges of attempted murder, each calling for twenty years in prison, in the most bizarre court-room drama ever enacted in this country. 3. THOUSANDS USHER IN NEW YEAR 2593 WITH COLORFUL CEREMONIES: MEGURO, JAPAN - Impressive and interesting rituals mark the celebration of the founding of the Empire almost 26 centuries ago, with hordes filling the streets of this temple city in regular “whoopee” processions, enlivened by the ancient customs of “bean-shooting” and “devil-chasing.” 4. PREP SCHOOL NOBLES COMPETE IN ANNUAL CROSS COUNTRY RACE: ETON, ENGLAND - Scions of nobility plough through mud and water in Eton College’s underclass steeplechase contests, as their schoolmates, in the proverbial top hats of the famous institution, climb trees to watch the “mudlarks” scramble through an icy brook and up slippery banks. The 3-mile course is a tough one, filled with unusual obstacles. 5. PUPPETS OF FAMOUS SALZBOURG THEATRE MAKE “DEBUT” TOUR: PARIS, FRANCE - The latest amusement fad in the French capital is a remarkable marionette show imported from the North Tirol. By means of unusual mechanical features, the dolls perform astounding stunts and amazing feats of a kind never before seen on the miniature stage. ODD BITS IN TODAY’S NEWS: 6. PILOT LANDS SAFE ON ROOF AS ENGINE FAILS/NEW YORK, NY - Unable to make an emergency landing when his motor stalled 2000 feet up over a Brooklyn residence district, Jerry Longobardi, a student flier, pancakes his plane on top of a three-story house, escaping with only a few scratches and bruises. 7. OPTIMISTIC BREWERS RE-OPEN BEER SCHOOL/CHICAGO, IL - Hard upon the heels of the Repeal resolution, the smallest brewery in the country, with a capacity of only 2½ gallons daily, starts an intensive training course for brew-masters with a record class in attendance, after a 15-year lapse. 8. CAMPBELL SETS NEW AUTO SPEED RECORD OF 272 MILES PER HR: DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Thrilling scenes of Sir Malcolm in his monster speed car Bluebird, going at the rate of 4½ miles a minute over the strand to hang up another world mark for bullet-like velocity on wheels. The dare-devil driver narrowly escapes disaster as bumpy sands cause the roaring machine to swerve and wobble. (LOCAL – ABERDEEN) BIG PAGEANT HOME IN “EXPERIMENT.”
