Colorful Ceremonies as Work Starts on Golden Gate Bridge (Universal Newsreel, Mar 1933)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. COLORFUL CEREMONIES AS WORK STARTS ON GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Comprehensive and impressive scenes of the gala celebration inaugurating the beginning of construction on the new harbor span, to be the largest suspension bridge in the world. 100,000 spectators view the monster land and naval parade, in which warships of the combined Atlantic and Pacific fleets, and 10,000 soldiers and sailors take part. 2. SPAHI TROOPS OBSERVE END OF RAMADAN FAST IN GALA CELEBRATION: COMPIEGNE, FRANCE - The crack 6th Moslem Cavalry of the French Army, garrisoned in ancient barracks here, marks the completion of its month of abstinence and its impending departure for service in North Africa with an elaborate jubilee. Although far from their home, these colonials strictly hold to the dictates of Islam and the Koran in picturesque rites and ceremonies. 3. SQUAD OF 300 STARTS SPRING PIGSKIN DRILL AT U. OF NOTRE DAME: SOUTH BEND, IN - The football season is still six months away, but the Fighting Irish are determined to have a world-beating grid team next fall, and already have begun their early practice under the direction of Coach “Hunk” Anderson. The unusually large turn-out of candidates indicates a big year for the Ramblers. 4. CABLE CARS ACROSS RIVER CHASM SPEED WORK ON DAM PROJECT: BOULDER CITY, NV - A breath-taking descent 1,000 feet into the canyon of the Colorado in a frail hoist used by workmen on the great Hoover barrage. Amazing scenes of men being swung across the deep gorge on small wire-supported platforms, and remarkable views of the rugged valley and the construction work far below. 5. “MOSQUITO FLEET” IN PERIL AS ICE SKIPPERS BRAVE 50-MILE WIND: MAUMEE BAY, OH - Daring ice-boat racers narrowly escape severe injury as stiff blasts turn their frail craft topsy-turvy, dumping the crews in breath-taking spills at a speed of 70 miles-an-hour. ODD BITS IN TODAY’S NEWS: 6. OWNS LIBRARY OF THE WORLD’S TINIEST BOOKS/BROOKLINE, MA - Impressive views of the largest collection of miniature volumes in the world, 6,000 in all, many of which are small enough to fit in the bowl of a teaspoon. 7. METAL FINGERNAIL IS LATEST PARIS FASHION/PARIS, FRANCE - Light metallic nails, made to order and colored to match Milady’s gowns, form the most recent fad in the French capital. The method of fitting them is unique and the effect is startling. 8. MACHINIST LEARNS TO JUGGLE IN SPARE TIME/CHICAGO, IL - After a year’s practice, Charles Russell, a mechanic, demonstrates an amazing stunt — holding 9 quart bottles of milk in one hand while his sister does a back bend on the other. 9. CROWD STANDS IN RAIN TO WITNESS WORLD’S MOST LAVISH CARNIVAL: VIAREGGIO, ITALY - More elaborate and grotesque than ever, the famous procession of floats and merry-makers, by which this Mediterranean resort celebrates “Fat Saturday” before the beginning of Lent, makes a striking scene of pageantry, unequalled anywhere on the globe.
