Kids and Mutt Pals Try for Champ Title in Annual Dog Derby (Universal Newsreel, Mar 1933)

Description

The original release sheet reads: 1. PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT’S EMERGENCY BANK BILL PASSED BY CONGRESS: WASHINGTON, D.C. - First sound pictures of the epochal opening of the special session of the Seventy-third Congress, the elevation of Representative Henry T. Rainey of Illinois to the Speaker’s Chair, the reading of President Roosevelt’s dramatic message calling for immediate banking legislation, and striking scenes of the President as he signs the resulting banking bill less than eight hours after his call for action to relieve the financial crisis. Meanwhile, in all parts of the country, philosophical citizens cheerfully make the best of the situation and transact business on a “credit and carry” basis, while “barter marts” grow and flourish. 2. KIDS AND MUTT PALS TRY FOR CHAMP TITLE IN ANNUAL DOG DERBY: BIG PINES, CA - Hectic scenes mark the running of the 1933 Junior “Mushing” race, with fifteen youngsters and their four-footed companions, of widely assorted breeds, in a 1½-mile struggle with small sleds through the snow-clad forest. 3. SHANTIES ON ICE LET FANS SCOFF AT COLD AND FISH IN COMFORT: LAKESIDE, OH - Determined fishermen solve the sub-zero weather problem by building small huts on runners, in which they sit snugly beside foot-stoves while angling through holes in the frozen surface of the lake. 4. PLANTING RICE FIELDS BY PLANE IS NEWEST FARMING TIME-SAVER: KNIGHTS LANDING, CA - A striking demonstration of grain sowing from airplanes, seeding an acre a minute, in an ultra-modern drive to put the West Coast on a production par with the Orient, now hampered by war. 5. CELEBRATE ARRIVAL OF SPRINGTIME IN QUAINT CEREMONIAL PAGEANT: IMST, AUSTRIA - Remarkable scenes of the strangest festival in the world, the Tirolean Phantom Dance, performed by villagers in weird masks, typifying the rout of Old Man Winter by the warm breezes of spring. Thousands flock to see the odd spectacle, held every third year. 6. SPILLS THRILL CROWD AS BOB-SLED RACERS DASH DOWN MOUNTAIN: SCHREIBERHAU, GERMANY - A Romanian two-man team wins the exciting championship run over the speediest and most hazardous course in the Riesen Mountains, making the 1700-meter slide in 1 minute, 25 seconds.
